I bought a 1987 Supra Saltare at the end of last season and wanted to replace the sound system in it this summer. I was wondering if anyone knew what size the speakers are as my boat is currently in storage and I was hoping to purchase a new receiver and speakers shortly.

Also does anyone have any recommendations for best boat stereo and speakers.

Thanks and I appreciate the help.

I put in Kicker 6.5s in with a Kenwood receiver, Kicker 10" sub, Fusion 3 way tower speakers and 2 amps in my 89 Sunsport. I'm no pro but it does sound good.

I will second the Fusions, I have those on my boat as well. They dont make them anymore to my knowledge. I have alpines in my cabin, which I think sound good, and then a JL marine 10" sub, which also sounds good IMO.

It really comes down to how much you want to pay. You could put in a 10k dollar wetsounds set-up or a 1500 dollar set-up, its up to you. I think I spent about 1500 on mine, but I bought most of the gear online, remember it usually isn't warrantied if you get it from an outlet or something like that. Then I installed it all myself so I saved there as well.

If you were to give a budget you want to stay stay in, I think people will be able to give better advice.

Those look pretty nice. The color scheme on your boat looks pretty similar to mine. I want to eventually put a tower with speakers on the boat but first thing is first and that is to replace the original stock receiver.

I think the budget I have would be around 500$

You can see the current deck (stock) in the pic which just quit on me the last day I had it out. Do you think there would be a need to get a cover system for it. I was thinking about getting this deck.

I know the pics aren't the greatest but like I said I got the boat at the end of the season.

Also willing to take suggestions on where and what kind of tower to purchase.

I'm running 6.5" myself. I'm running some Clarion's I bought from a friend last year when he upgraded his. I'm also running a Fosgate 10" sub off an Alpine 150W RMS amps. I run the in-boat speakers off my stereo right now. I bought the Kicker KMT6's from another friend. He powered those with the Kicker KX450.2 amp and said they sounded good. I'm planning to do that same thing. I'll probably continue to run the sub off the Alpine amp and the in-boat speakers off the stereo. Next year I'll probably upgrade to the KX700.5 (or ZX700.5) and run the in-boats and sub of that.

Michael,

I like where you mounted the stereo...good use of that space. So what do you have in the space on the port side where the stereo was originally installed?

Hey there awesome user name and welcome! I have an 87 SunSport. All the cabin speakers should be 6.5".

You of course have many many options and could spend many thousands on marine stereo equip. I was able to get my boat setup for about $500 complete.

-$240 Kicker KMT6 tower speakers (best budget tower speakers, debatable of course)
-Budget amp and 12" sub from millionbuy.com
http://www.millionbuy.com/crup50005.html
Here is my amp is is a 5 channel amp so it is able to power my cabin speakers on two channels, tower speakers on two channels, and also has a dedicated sub channel.
-The sub is a budget Powerbass 12" for about $40. All these items are new from major manufacturers with warranty. They are not marine audio items with the exception of the Kickers.

I do not use a head unit/car stereo unit, I simply plug my ipod into an EQ unit, and then run that to the amp. The EQ I use is very popular on wakeworld on budget setups but it is not the same level as professional pieces like Wetsounds brand speakers and equalizer. It is the Clarion EQS746 for about $60 http://www.millionbuy.com/crup50005.html

The ipod should have a dedicated cable to charge it as well as use the data cable to send sound out, NOT the headphone jack which can distort sound when you turn up the volume because it doesn't have a level limiter funciton.

Oh and sorry but you should probably add a deep cell 2nd battery as well as a two-battery combiner/isolator like the SurePower for $65 (discussing right now in another thred), and upgrade your alt to a 105amp version from dbalternator.com for about $80.

Also you would need amp power wire 4 or 2 guage, and some 14g remote turn-on wire that will also power the accessories like eq, ipod charger, etc. Do not buy car amp kits from the net unless you want to buy two like I did, because they just aren't long enough. There are great stores to get all the wire in custom lengths from.
