Should the threads on the plugs be coated or wraped with something ? I cleaned them all up and did not want to miss something. It looked like something was on there but what ?

put some antisieze on them at least that way they are easier to insert and remove......part in the spring if you leave them out over the winter

One item which might help, Is to install a fitting which is a 1/4 npt male/female. This will allow you to thread in the fitting into the block and leave the brass fitting in the block all winter, just remove the brass 1/4" npt plug. Mercruiser engines have one better, they use a special fitting which threads into the block and then has a blue plastic wing plug with an oring for the drain plug. These blue plugs can be removed without tools. Much easier and quicker. I installed these in my 496 HO engine for drain fittings. Al
