Hi,

My '86 sunsport has pretty stiff steering suddenly. I have greased to rudder assembly, but it's still pretty stiff. I checked the cable routing and there are no serious bends.

My next option is to detach the cable and see if it's not running smooth, but before I do this anyone have any good advice?

Steering cables are one of those things that just need to be replaced, eventually. You've had almost 25 years with this one -- I don't think you'd do wrong to replace it. It's a bit of a pain in the ass and you might want to do your throttle cable at the same time. skidim can tell you what length you need and get you all set-up. When I did it, I bought a new helm, too. As long as you are going to the trouble to replace the steering cable.... you don't want to chance that your helm is also bound up. My controls felt like new when I was done.

Wotan is correct. Needs replaced. I do wish I would have upgraded to a tilt wheel when I did mine. Good luck.
