From my research most boats with a 1" shaft use the 1/4" packing. I just replaced mine with the Gor-tex GFO dripless packing from skidim.com. I am very happy with this no water in the bilge yeah!!

I just replaced the stuffing on my 1985 comp and I did have to remove the back seat but not the engine box. I have an access panel in the floor that will come out with 4 screws once the seat is out. The stuffing box is right in the middle of that opening. No need to even open the engine cover. I hope this helps.

On a similar topic, does anyone happen to know the packing nut sizes? I need to pick up a couple of wrenches...thanks in advance.

1-7/8", for cost efficiency I recommend one adjustable and one pipe wrench. Nothing worse than spending $80 on two 1-7/8" wrenches that will NEVER see any other use...

Thanks Ptownkid...I saw a mechanic that had a combination wrench, cut in half with a slot in the box end to get over the shaft. He had a cheap made in china wrench. I am thinking this will be the way to go. Thanks for your help!!!
