if you dont have a strainer then you may want to check the impeller. Beginning of 08 maybe along time ago depending how many hours have been put on it. You may also want to change your thermostat as may have accumulated rust in it. 180 is ok but if your getting up to 200 thats not imo. What are you used to it running at ?

I have a 190 degree thermostat and temp runs between 180 and 190. On my old engine I used to run at 160-170.

Mine sits at 180 all day. I was told anything above that was getting too high. I had it checked and it was actually around 165. Thermo may need replacing. You should check it out if it's hitting 200.

IMHO - Nothing wrong with 200, engine will run more efficiently at 200 than 180, and engine is not in any danger even at temps well above 200. If my engine would always run at 210 to 220 I would be happy. 160's are just to low, 180 should be minimum. A number of bad things happen at lower temps.

That being said, I have learned from many years of racing marine engines that I don't trust the gauges at all. The gauges can be indicative of fluctuations and changes from normal but I don't trust any number I see on them.

If you have any questions, go get a pyrometer from almost any autoparts store or even the cheap ones at Harbor Freight work well. Check your engine block and heads at several spots. Of course it will be hottest around the exhaust ports.

If you have had a change from what you normally see on your temp gauge then you should look into it.

I believe 200's are going to be to hot for an open system being cooled with water. Water boils at around 212 depending on the altitude. In a closed system with antifreeze you would be OK at a higher temp. If you feel your boat is running to hot or cold, pull the thermastat and see what it is rated for. Should have a reading somewhere close to it's rating.
