a friendly reminder to all to check your trailer straps periodically and replace as necessary. i knew mine was a little frayed but thought i had much more time.

i knew somethine was wrong when i saw the trailer:

then i noticed the bow stop:

and then i saw the culprit:

and it happened on this ramp:

my boat could have been an ugly fiberglass smear on the ramp!

The winch strap snapped on me the very first time I pulled the boat out of the water. Luckily, I had secured it with a safety rope. Since then, I switched from the safety rope to a safety chain...no worries!

Salty87,

I have a question for you about your wakeplate. My '86 Sunsport has the same plate and the previous owners had some repair work done on the bottom around the rudder plate and the wake plate. I recently tried to adjust the wake plate for a better slalom wake, but it is mounted about 1 inch forward of the transom, and consequently wouldn't move up or down. I assume this is not how it should be mounted and that it should be flush with the transom, so that it can pivot. Can you comment on this? Maybe it's mounted correctly and I'm doing something wrong?

Thanks,
Jeff

JFP,

sounds like someting is jacked up. the hinge on my wake plate is lined up completely flush with the bottom on the transom. it should move easily when you adjust it.

i've seen some odd repairs on mine, too. but, nothing like that. what position is it stuck in?

ps i bought one of these instead of a strap, getting saftey chain next.

Salty,

It's stuck in the mostly up position, which is unfortunate for us because we're skiers and not wakeboarders. Out of curiosity, how is your's attached to the transom/bottom of the hull? Mine is mounted directly to the underside of the hull with screws, which doesn't allow for any movement, not even flex. I'm wondering if this is something that I can restore to its proper state. If it's not too much trouble, the next time you've got your camera in hand, could you take a couple of pics of your wakeplate and send them to me? If I see how your's is mounted, it would give me an idea of what I would have to do to mine.

I think I'll invest in a safety chain after hearing your story and the other similar story posted.

Thanks,
Jeff

after further review.....there's no hinge on my wake plate. real nice memory i have there.

my plate continues further forward of the stern by about 2" like RFP described. i've never really tried to see how far down it will go.

At least on my 87 comp, the plat is not hinged, but does flex if the appropriate adjustment is mode.

I haven't really seen any major change in the wake table, though.
