did you try disconnecting the cable and moving the lever on the transmission by hand?

Also, what happens when you try to put it in reverse?

I can see the linkage working just fine and when i put it into reverse, the rpms just go up and nothing happens, i think the reverse clutch plates or springs might be bad ?

i'd still disconnect the cable and try it by hand. the linkage doesn't have to be out of adjustment by much for it to not engage. give it a shot and keep your fingers crossed, won't cost nothing. if you try on the trailer, wet the shaft bushing in the strut first and hook up a hose or fake a lake.

Velvet drive transmision's are some of the easiest inboard tranny's to service and rebuild. Kind of the small block chevy in the tranny world. Parts are also cheap. Pull it and buy a manual and rebuild it No problem. Al

What is the oil level in the tranny, I would check this first, also is the oil clean and does it smell, if you have burnt plates aka clutche plates slipping you should be able to smell it.

Last rebuild kit I bought was couple of years ago from Discount inboard marine. skidim.com, Used to deal with them a lot. Also have a couple of fellas there that can answer just about any question you have as well as excellent service. I'm with Salty though, Check for linkage malfunction, but sounds like maybe the planetaries gave up on ya.
Here's a link that looks promising (Hale Marine inf)
