Looking at buying a 2002 ssv. Cosmetically the boat is perfect but it does have 800 hours. Should I be concerned?

My 1999 launch has 970 hours and is still running as good as new! Buy it and enjoy

I would look at it very carefully but as the dawg said ... My boat is an 08 and has
310 hours on it already. I didn't buy it to have it just sit and look pretty - I use
it and live in a part of the country where 4-5 months of the year, you can drive your CAR on the water!

I have a friend in seattle that has a 2000 launch with over 1500 hours on it. He has had to do only cosmetic repairs. He uses it hard and got it from a pro so they used it hard before him. Still runs smooth. I wouldnt worry. I think boats that sit are way worse off than ones that are used.

If it has been maintained properly, not a huge deal. Have a mechanic look it over, my friend has 1900 hours on his Sanger and its still cranking away.

I totally agree, boats with little to no use have far more problems.... someone on here posted up problems with an '08 with 16 hours, his fuel filter was totally clogged with bad gas.

I hope I have lots of hours on my '08 when I sell it, that means I spent a lot of time on the water! did not buy it to sit in the garage.... just clicked 220 hours and going out for a full day tomorrow!

How is the boat? I bought a 2002 SSV had 900 hours on it... 3rd time out the motor started knockin and smoking... Had to put a Jasper Rebuilt in it!

Nothing wrong with some experience. Normally if the boat has higher hours and still looks great the drive line should be taken care of too. Lots of hours to me equals a great deal. If someting does go south then you can always add a few go fast extras..... If you play your cards right you will save money in the long run !!

For comparison sake, My 2008 GMC pickup has only 17k miles on it and the hour meter reads 675 hours. The truth is, most marine engines die an early death from poor maintenance or water intrusion LONG before they are even close to wearing out.

800 hours on a 2002 boat is only 100 hours a year. I would rather buy an 8 year old boat with 800 hours that I know has been used often every year than an 8 year old boat with 100 hours that has spent most of it's life laid up.

If something seems fishy, run a compression check. Getting a used oil analysis can also give you a good idea of how the motor is wearing on the inside.

800 hours is still pretty young. You may get her up close to 2000 hours before needing a new engine to run for another 20 years.

With that said I replaced my engine on my '87 at 800 hours. The motor had bad compression in several cylinders. She still ran strong for 23 years. No regrets.
