Could someone please advise me on the correct procedure for replacing the packing in the rudder. I have a 91 Comp ts6m. The rudder was leaking. I removed the rudder and packing nut and put the waxed rope into the nut butted end to end. I put two layers of 1/4 inch packing with the butt joints 180 degrees apart. My question is how tight to tighten it back down. Also, skidim said I did not have to lubricate the shaft. Somehow this just don't sound right. I have tightened the nut with a big pair of channel locks, but I don't think I have compressed the seal yet. Is there a better way? Also, how do you know if you have the rudder correctly positioned. It looks like the only thing that holds it in is the big cotter pin and the packing nut. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I know its not rocket science, but I am a bit confused. Thanks.
