Impeller question

So I am in the middle of replacing my impeller and the new impeller cam with an o-ring but I don't see the old one in there. Where does this o-ring go? Would a missing o-ring cause the pump to leak water faster then it should?

My 96 comp didnt have a place for o ring either. Even though new impeller came with one. I had a thin gasket that broke when I took off. I put a bead of silicone around the housing and it was good to go. No leaks.
