Anyone have any feedback on the new Dodge Ram trucks (1500). They're running some awesome specials right now at a local dealer and between my current truck's equity and the rebates I could knock over $20K off a new truck. I've seen reviews that look good and I know the 2010 has won quite a few awards. Any thoughts any of you can share?

I wouldn't be caught pulling the boat or car trailer with one of those. I would always be worried about it breaking down, and everytime I have driven one it always seems to be searching for gears and gets single digit MPG. Always low on power.

F150 or Silverado/Sierra would be a much better choice.

I disagree with Bama. I would love to have new Ram. I currently have the 05 Ram with the Hemi. The new ones have more power, more torque, and have the MDS, to save mileage. I must admit, pulling my 22 Sunsport V drive I average about 11 or 12 MPG, but never in the single digits. You may see slightly better mileage with the new engine, and mine doesn't have the MDS...they started that in 2006. It pulls it with plenty of power. The only thing to consider is if you wanted to step up to a diesel engine. It just wasn't worth it to me. I would not hesitate to get one. Good luck, let us know what you decide!

Not sure on the 2010 or newer's quality, I did have a talk with my Toyota dealer about Dodges deals lately and all he could say was "they're dropp'in their pants." Tons of them on the roads up here in Ontario, must say something...I always thought the tranny was Chrysler's weak point, maybe that's changed...

Went and drove one yesterday. Man, awesome ride. It was kind of weird without the rear leaf spring feel. Power is awesome. Features are nice. Deals are good and it is very tempting. Like I had said, online reviews are really good. It seems like a solid truck. Just have to decide if it is worth the extended payments. My current truck will be paid off in about 10 months.

I know there are plenty of people who've had success with Dodge trucks, but stereotypically, they've had reliability issues. They've always been the least expensive truck you can buy, and personally, I think there's a reason for that. Just something to consider.

Pulled the trigger. The wife now has a nice new truck to drive. I feel like it was a good deal and should be a good truck. It's nice to have the piece of mind of a warranty to cover things for the next few years.

Here's a few pictures...

Nice lookin rig. My 04 Ram still (130k) runs like when I got her (12k).

Ya know, a true Supra owner woulda bought a blue truck to match his boat...

titan,

They call it Inferno Red. Kind of in between red and maroon and has a bit of a candy apple red feel to it.

sybr,

LOL! Color choices were a little limited and they're blue is quite a bit different than the Supra blue.

maple,

Ya know, I didn't really consider that, but you're right. I guess all the local Sooner fans will love me eh? Kinda helps this USC supporting California boy blend in a little. ;-)

That is a beauty! I used to have a 2001 1500 and did not have any issues with it. It towed the old boat just fine, but that was only a 19 1/2 foot direct drive. I really enjoyed that truck and I am sure you will enjoy yours as well.

jay,

What rear end gear ratio does yours have and how much does your boat weigh (total trailering weight)?

I had to buy a new to me truck recently and a Ford dealership in Dallas had a killer deal on a 2006 Ram 1500 Hemi. I talked around to some people and I got alot of negative comments but it seemed like all the people who trashed them never owner one. It was always "My buddy has one of those and it's always in the shop". My g/fs dad owns an 05 1500 with the 4.7 that has 110,000 miles on it and he used to pull his 9,500 lb travel trailer with it and it has not had any issues (the recently upgraded to a 2500 diesel, still have the 1500 tho). Everyone I talked to who owns has had nothing bad to say. So to make a long story end, I bought it. Had 55k miles on it when I bought and it did has a problem with the IPC and the HVAC box but the dealer fixed both issues for me free of charge. Pulls the boat without a problem.

All I will buy is Dodge. Sure the Fords and Chevs have there diehard fans but to me the proof is in owning them. I have had every generation but the fourth. Love the diesels the most but keep in mind I use them like a work truck.

Comming out of the quarry with a combined weight of 22 500 lbs on the truck and trailer and still able to get 15 MPG.... Not to bad for one of those junky ol Dodges, yep she is a 95 2500 series long box extended cab 4x4 with only 650 000 kms on the clock.

Not to say you wont have some issues but the 02 to present 1500 series truck. They are very reliable and the trans are almost as dependable as the Allison in the Chev, but without the 6000 price tag to rebuild....

I was always a Chevy guy, but in July 2009 I bought this...
It's the Hemi, Supercab sport. Still get's 22 MPG on the freeway, 12-13 towing the boat. It does have the MDS, and rides liek a sports car. Only complaint I would have is the cargo capacity. A heavy load in the back really lets you know it is there. no problem whatsoever towing the boat though....

Actually that dal went south. There were some issues with financing and they waned me to agree to other terms a few weeks after the fact when they were struggling to get it bought at the terms they offered. I wouldn't agree to anything besides what was offered so we did an unwind and I took the truck back.

It was a bummer because the whole deal was what worked for me, especially the huge rebates and good price they gave me.

I've been looking around since then and we just recently got into a used Avalanche.

I have an 08 Burb with the 5.3 - I traded my 03 F250 off on it a couple years back... shouldn't have done that! Love the burb but with all it's weight it does pretty good - it's when you add the boat to it that it is workin that motor out...
If they only made a Diesel Burb...!!! the 7.3 in my ford got around 20 ( towing)
- this thing...not so much. I added a Bullydog downloader which helps alot - but once you've pulled with a diesel - gas is a step back...
suspension is fine - did a brake upgrade to EBC rotors and yellowstuff pads - I'm happy for now...

I have a 2012 Ram 1500 and it tows great, I did ad air lift air bags to the rear ($100) best investment i made. As far as reliability mine did break down at 12k miles, starter went out. Also has the upper steering shaft replaced at 36k miles right before the warranty expired. It now has 40k miles and no other complaints so far. I do think the paint on the new ones is a little cheap it chips easily. The ride quality and power are very good. I average about 18mpg on the highway and 12 towing.

I also have a 2012 Ram 1500. No doubt well-made interior, clever storage spaces, powerful V8 as well as lots of interior space. Overall is good but one thing I mostly irritate with a poor base model engine with poor gas mileage.

I own a landscape design company and over the past 15 years in business I have had dodge, chevy,Toyota , and ford. Ill tell you what you get what you pay for. Maintenance and reliability wise ford is by far the best truck on the market. I have had very little problems with fords. Chevys where not bad but didnt have the capacity the fords have. Dodge trucks start to rattle and then all the problems start. I have a family member that works for a dealer that sells them all and he tell me that ford parts sold is way less then any of the others. My new personal truck has the Ecoboost and it has unbelievable power and gets great gas mileage. Get a ford and this is coming from someone who has employees who beat on my trucks.

I have a 2013 Ram 1500 Crew Cab with the 5.7.....its a good truck. I had a 2010 Chevy Avalanche that other than tires and general maintenance it was good until the 100K warranty was about up. The engine rattled at start horribly. Also have a new Yukon XL that has been serviced to a top that just had a complete new crate motor put in it from GM, bad engine. I decided a few months ago it was time to move from GM products, reason for getting a RAM. Ford was my second option.....and I didn't go there due to the fact they only offered a 60K powertrain warranty and the 2 trucks equipped close to the same, the Ford was $7400 higher in price. I have had 3 other Rams in the past....a 2003 crew, and (2) 2004 Rams, all purchased new and serviced as they should have been and all of them ran pretty much flawlessly. Power steering pump went on one of them seems to be the only thing I can recall. Bottom line today, they all are pretty much gonna be the same other than the name plate on the tailgate.....its all in your maintenance and how you treat it.

Ha sorry I have to post this movie quote.
Tommy: Let’s think about this for a sec, Ted. Why would somebody put a guarantee on a box? Hmmm, very interesting.

Ted Nelson, Customer: Go on, I’m listening.
Tommy: Here’s the way I see it, Ted. Guy puts a fancy guarantee on a box ’cause he wants you to feel all warm and toasty inside.

Ted Nelson, Customer: Yeah, makes a man feel good.

Tommy: ‘Course it does. Why shouldn’t it? Ya figure you put that little box under your pillow at night, the Guarantee Fairy might come by and leave a quarter, am I right, Ted?
[chuckles until he sees that Ted is not laughing]

Ted Nelson, Customer: [impatiently] What’s your point?

Tommy: The point is, how do you know the fairy isn’t a crazy glue sniffer? “Building model airplanes” says the little fairy; well, we’re not buying it. He sneaks into your house once, that’s all it takes. The next thing you know, there’s money missing off the dresser, and your daughter’s knocked up. I seen it a hundred times.

Ted Nelson, Customer: But why do they put a guarantee on the box?

Tommy: Because they know all they sold ya was a guaranteed piece of shi*. That’s all it is, isn’t it? Hey, if you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it guaranteed, I will. I got spare time. But for now, for your customer’s sake, for your daughter’s sake, ya might wanna think about buying a quality product from me.
