Just another Old Skool Sunsport
By matt krueger (flyspec14) on Tuesday, September 23, 2008 - 12:54 pm:

The pics tell most of it, but this is one of our latest builds. Its an '85 Sunsport with a DIY 1/2 wrap by ReBoat Wraps, Custom tower, Wetsounds Double-Up speakers, new interior, new cover & a ton of elbow grease. It definitely gets alot of attention. Big thanks to Tim @ Wetsounds & Dave @ Bohemian Canvas.

Thinks are looking brighter every time I look at this forum for ideas for the boat!

Oh yeah I have spent many minutes drooling over this boat. I should probably invite matt over here to take his own spotlight. I asked him about the wrap and I think he said you can get a 1/4 wrap for like $400... If someone out there can get access to a vinyl printer of about this size (3' width x whatever length) I know I could get the designs done in-house if you will :)

I really like the sticker on the transom and I am torn weather to get awesome chrome letters like Hunter did or stickers or what... but transom is too plain! :)

That is actually hard to tell that is an older boat. You almost have to do a tripple take!!!

Wakenmikey. I got a buddy that has a 4 foot printer. I know he would let me do a wrap on it for cost. Give me a shout we will discuss.

Mikey, do you know anymore info on this guys "Custom tower"? It kind of looks like this the Airborne tower from http://www.h2osportswarehouse.com/aerial-wakeboard-wakeboarding-tower-boat-airborne-dealer-s/73.htm

The way the racks are mounted on the SunSport make me think it must be a New Dimensions... but it's not the Supra-style ND.

I thought it was an Arial tower too. I sent him a PM through WW. :)

Yeah. I'd also like to hear about this wrap business. They last like 5 years? What's the film/media made of? Is this the same product they use on advertising you see on the city buses and whole vehicle ads? So when it's taken off you don't have any residue on your gel coat? Please share with this newbie to wraps...

Well can we have S_I figure out what the cost would be through his hookup? I know we could design something sweet.

Nice! I'm trolling around lookin for info on my stringer, floor, foam project and I find pictures of my boat! Thanks Mikey for the hook and to everyone else for the kind words ;)

As for the questions regarding the tower. We found a tower that was close on specs to the boat at Great Lakes Skipper. They basically buy out manufacturers excess inventory and sell it. This tower was actually made for a Tahoe. We chopped the feet off of it and welded on new mounts from DIYWake. It was critical for this boat to be able to fold the tower pretty low for bridges. It does fold forward fairly well. If I were to do it again I would have fabbed up rigid feet. The DIY mounts are a little too universal and give a bit too much. I may change that down the road. Otherwise it does have a fairly new look. The New Dimension towers are nice, just look a little dated IMO. The racks are a Skylon product. The bimini was also from Great Lakes Skipper with DIY clamps.

As for the wrap, that is another part of our business. We would likely sell a wrap like this for $600-800. If you can think it up we can make it happen.

As for future plans we are way deep into a pretty rotten floor and stringer project. FYI, I know its been said here before, but CHECK YOUR ALIGNMENT. If I would have done this more I would have noticed the issue of the motor settling from stringer rot and would have saved myself $700 in driveshaft and prop. Not to mention being stranded ;)

So go grab your feeler guage and check it out.

Sometimes beauty is only skin deep!! Good luck with your stringer's, seems to be a popular topic around here.....keep us posted.....
I found my boat in a camp video (previous owner) and got a pretty good kick out of it too!

Hey there hope you didn't think I was poaching your pics or anything...just such a lovely boat! :)

So in your old WW thread, the shaft breaking was caused by the stringer rot, not by hitting something? Yikes!!!

Is the alignment something that is visable to the eye at all?

You can't check shaft alignment at all until you unbolt the coupler between the tranny and the driveshaft. Once you take the bolts out.... spin your prop by hand a few times and you should be able to do a quick visual to see if you're "close" or "way-off."

I have a similar story to reboats -- my engine twisted in rotten stringers, wore a hole through the shaft log, bent the drive shaft, bent the strut, ruined my dripless shaft seal and ultimately caused the boat to sink (only a couple feet of water, but the water was still over the floor.)

CHECK YOUR ALIGNMENT! I was incredibly happy when I pulled my engine last week... when I went to put it back in, I bolted it back up to the same spots and my alignment was still dead on. Made me feel really good about how my new stringers have been holding up.

You can even check it with unbolting your coupler.

Mikey, no worries on poaching. It's free press ;)

Hey Reboat, do you guys have any sort of standard designs for the wraps, or is it on a boat by boat basis?? Been interested in possibly updating the look of mine!!

ReBoat Industries
01-16-2011, 08:48 PM
I will PM Mikey for help moving this.

The back story on this is that I had a customer of mine that owned a boat repair company, I paid him $2k down to get started and he went out of business half way in to the tear out. Now, I don't have any of the measurements, etc. that would be really nice to have ;(

I could likely handle this on my own but I am extremely short on time these days. I think I have located a local shop that will do the majority of the work, though I'm a bit skeptical after this whole debacle.

@BadBlu, we really don't focus as much on the boat market as we used to, so, no, we don't have a catalog of designs. But if you have an idea I can give you some options. As long as it doesn't involve skulls ;)

from the outside it is still a good looking boat. As long as you leave that travel cover on no one would ever know!

Love the wrap. I was considering it myself. The thing that I worry about is where it stops on the bow area. Does the water pressure from driving it down the lake not get under the leading edge and start to peel it off? I have trouble fathoming something that stays stuck on like that, but can be pulled off down the road with no residue left on the boat.

Is that a special marine grade vinyl, or is it just your average every day vinyl like someone would use for decals on cars and such?

Nga lol! When I started the thread the interior was all original and flawless. Looks like everything is getting an upgrade.

You do know that pulling "coolest" and "ever" draws a line in the sand right? Sounds like a challenge.

I do agree though. I think to pull off "coolest ever" you best have an LS9 and a V-Drive conversion. Just my $.02

Regarding the few wrap questions. We could have definitely extended the wrap to the bow and not had a worry about peeling or lifting. We have a number of 70mph boats out there that we have wrapped and have gotten 4+ years of use. This wrap was a beta test with an extremely cost effective material that really worked well. It saw 3 years of use and no failure. Somewhere to the tune of $400 retail.

The boat is headed to the shop next week to begin Stage 3.1.

Perhaps you could incorperate the wrap design into the interior. Stiched into the seats as a logo or accent.

Great modern upgrade to the boat ... Hope the stringers and interior gets finished before spring thaw..
