View Full Version : Help me find a Saltare, and get paid for it.

I've been hunting down Saltare's for the past 5 years. I always miss the ones I want.

So now I'm enlisting your help. I'm trying to find a 1989-1993 Supra Saltare in bright Red or Black.

If someone points me to one, and I buy it, I'll give the finder $250. I think that's a fair finder's fee for a boat that most of us notice or pay attention to when we see one anyways. I can't seem to find these boats, or when I do they are already sold.

I love my Mariah, but I want to upsize my boat, and I will always have an older Supra. I've got programs that search every boat listing and craigslist online, but they are still slipping through.

I'm an avid builder, and I brought my Mariah back from the dead, so rough ones or gorgeous ones count.

There are a couple of guys that you all know on here that can vouch for my word. Guys, I would really appreciate the help. It's going to be boat season soon, so I expect them to start popping up soon.

Thanks guys,
Haugy

Thanks man, I appreciate it.

I have seen it, I've actually got a friend in Austin who is going to go by and check it. I saw the white, and jumped all over it. I was surprised at a 93 model in true white. That boat right there is rare beyond rare, like Moby Dick.

Thanks for the link though. I cracked up when I saw the spelling.

I here ya, I'd be all over that one if the mechanicals check out, I'm a couple years away from my next boat ($$) and an all composite older one is definitely on the list......
Never mind the white on white, that thing's gorgeous.....

Not necessarily in your desired year range, but aren't they all pretty much the same? At least the earlier ones? I've noticed the newer they are, the less teak they have.

A bit rough but it has potential.

Not necessarily, each year has different features. And as for teak, I'm not a fan anyways. If I want teak, I'll go get a 1942 Hacker Craft. :D

Saw the burgandy one, problem is he didn't take care of it all. While I don't mind a challenge, in fact I invite them, I want to do it for a boat that I feel is worth it. I've had that Burgandy before in an 89 Comp. Nice looking, but not my true tastes.
Green one is out just because it's a pretty bad color in my opinion.

And I went and saw the Pirata, he's down the road from me. Hasn't taken care of it at all. Left it in the water for the last year so the hull is as green as the other Saltare, floor is shot to hell, and the interior looks like a family of angry cats got ahold of the vinyl.
I told him I'd give him $1000, and that's it. He of course declined.

The other one is in Canada, and for a Pirata, not worth it.

Yeah, I know yours is gorgeous, that's the type I'm looking for.

I called about that Saltare in Texas and noticed the engine had a 350 in it. I thought that model came with the 454. What did you find out and am I correct in thinking that?

The 454 believe it or not is very commonly mistaken for a 350. But in 1993 they also started to introduce the newer 350mags in those boats. So they are out there. I wouldn't be too surprised.

Out of curiosity since you've been eying these Saltare's longer than I have, what are going prices on them? I don't see all that many pop up so I wonder sometimes.

I think I got a good deal on mine. Supposedly floor and stringers were done in 2007, along with rebuilt engine with some minor performance parts. Not sure how extensively it was all patched up, but from what I can tell it's all solid and it runs great. I'm just wondering if I should bump up my insurance on it a bit to be safe, especially after the snow/salt goes away and I bring it to get 3 seat cushions reupholstered and a cover made.

Your the 4th person to ask me that recently. With a boat like yours, the worth is in your eyes directly. I've got a line for a Saltare just like yours and it is immaculate, the guy wants $15,000 though. Too rich for my blood for a bone stock Saltare. The boat is nice, but the trailer is junk.

I've seen Saltares going from $4000 dying boats that need major help, to $13-15k high-enders. The average is $7,000 to $9,000 for a good condition boat that needs work, but nothing major.

Honestly bud, with your boat, if the gelcoat is great, the seats and vinyl are good, engine is 100%, and the floors are redone like you said. I would say $10,000 is a very fair value for that boat.

As you can see though, a 93 Saltare in good condition, not great, with fiberglass stringers goes for $9,999. But there are so many variables in these boats that can fluctuate the price so quickly. Engines, transmissions (1.28:1 or 1:1), GT40 heads or not, stringers in shape versus floor in shape. Electrical system in check, saltwater run or freshwater. These small factors can really make a big jump in value.

If you know how to talk the talk, you can value the boat on your own and have insurance cover it since boats values are really hard to estimate.

Thanks for the input. It's currently insured for $8k and I now feel it's worth more, between some boats I've seen and book value I'm thinking $10k-$12k after I get the little things it needs taken care of. I would feel confident at that price I could find another Saltare in similar condition or a suitable replacement. At $8k it could be tricky shopping around.

Overall I'm impressed with the condition of my boat for an '89. Gel is nice with only a couple minor scratches, everything is solid. No soft spots anywhere and the boat feels solid even hitting tug and cruiser wakes. The 454 runs like a top and will hit 47 on GPS, maybe a bit more but those last few MPH are slow to get to and I see no reason to beat on her.

Insurance is agreed value and they're never given me trouble about values previously. I had previous boat insured for $8k which was probably 2x-3x what it was worth in my eyes. When I changed the policy to the Saltare I just kept it at $8k. I'll up it in spring before I hit the river for peace of mind. The Delaware can be interesting at times. Lots of pilings submerged at high tide only visible at low tide if at all, lots of debris after rain, etc. I know where all the hazards are in my usual riding spots but better safe than sorry.

I have been looking all winter at alll the older Supra boats. Seems to me the good ones sell in days and the over priced straglers turn stale. Be patient the right boat will turn up... I too am looking for a nice Sunsport, love my Comp but the family seems to be getting bigger. Plus I like the deeper V hull.

It's not as easy to change as you think on the older boats. This boat that I purchase will be with me for a long time. The only reason I'm selling my Mariah is for a deeper freeboard and larger boat. Otherwise my Mariah is perfect. So for me to not only buy another boat, but to pay a finders fee, I'm going to be picky. I'm not trying to be rude, or arrogant. I just know what I want.

That black Saltare is nice. I'll have to send one of my buddies to go look at that one. Not totally out of the price range if it's worth it.

Did you ever get any info/feedback on the '93 in Austin?

haugy
02-22-2011, 12:33 PM
Here's what I got from him. I'm guessing these are scans are they are heavily pixelated.

He say's it's a dark blue, and that even he thought it was black. But up close it's dark blue.

To my recollection Supra never made a dark blue that dark. They had a Navy, but not that dark. My guess is that it's faded or oxidized black. What are yall's thoughts?
Not a big fan of the pink stripes, but could work around that. Could be a nice boat, but there are tons of unanswered questions I have for him. He called me and we talked, but without being able to send someone to see the boat it's all up in the air.

He swapped out the dual seat at the captain's helm for a modern single swivel seat, but he still has the old one.

The boat is 4 hours from him, so I'll have to wait to get high-res pics in more detail.

He may have had his camera set weird too. I've had pictures come out like that when I set the preset knob on the wrong setting...kind of grainy. I agree that it is probably black that has faded some. From the few pictures you've posted it looks nice. If it was a little closer I'd be glad to golook at it for you. He said it was at Lake of the Ozarks, right?

haugy
02-22-2011, 07:22 PM
Yeah, I still think it's black. I've seen the Navy, and it's nowhere near that dark.

The boat is in Pontiac Missouri, he puts in at Bull Shoals Lake.

Pontiac is basically on Bull Shoals. Have you already set something up with one of the guys on wb.com to look at it? I know there are several in MO. Several of the guys on here, including jonyb are going to BroStock too. I would imagine it would be sold by then, though. Wish I was closer so I could check it out for you.

I'm interested to see what it takes for him to get you more pictures and information. It does seem a little odd that he doesn't have that already, but I've delt with that before on several things. It's like people just expect you to buy their item without a whole lot of information.

I think my 89 Salt is the same color (but "black" in the top accent stripes as well). When I brought it home, I thought it was just heavily oxidized black but the wife saw it and said blue. Cosmetics are way down on my list, but I did wetsand & polish a section and thought it turned out black. Then I sat the hull back down on my freshly black powdercoated trailer and I can again see a slight blueish tint again by comparison. A pro glass shop said it was so close to black even he couldn't tell for sure what was underneath, but even if originally black it might not come back completely black because of the way black oxidizes.

Hard to describe a color with words, but it's a really dark color - much closer to black than blue, but just not a true black. Still hoping a thorough wetsanding/compounding/polish will blacken it up further. But if not, I think it's so close that black accessories (trailer, tower, lettering, vinyl) will look just fine. Good luck with your quest.

Okay, I'm going to say it. BEWARE OF THE RED 1993 SALTARE!!!!!

I've seen detailed pictures of that boat. It's in much worse shape than those pictures portray. Saltwater run, interior is shot, windshield cracked, dash/gauges need complete replacement.

I passed on this one once I learned about it's condition. I thought it would be a good project as my last boat was somewhat rough before I fixed it up. But this one is beyond what I want to deal with. Rust all over the engine components and mounts, etc.

To anyone who wants this boat, go for it. I passed on this one in January.

thats what a used car salesmen does buys at auction and details it and then try to sell it for more. restoring a boat and then selling for a profit is very hard if it was restored right. i restored my rider completely doing all work myself except for the machining of the engine block, and I am just hoping that I can sell it with only losing about $5000 boats are a lot harder to flip than cars and houses are. you cant just paint them and make them nice. and i only paid 1200 for my boat when I bought it and other than the sever rotting of all wood the boat was in great shape. these prices people want for boats with high hours needing floor and stringers are crazy.

Question: Is it really cool to have a loveseat or a couch for the driver's seat in a Saltare? If I had a Saltare, I'd probably swap that to a nice size captain's chair.

I guess "cool" is a personal preference. Having a boat babe on deck is cool, but having the option of her snuggled up next to you is way cooler. Plus it's just wasted space in front of the doghouse & also a good tool for teaching the little ones to drive.

Good luck with the quest, Haugy. Patience is key - it took me over a year to find my Salt. Agreed, the mohave looks real clean (if you can handle the blue) & dry desert air is probably easier on the structure.

Married 19 years here, so no delusions of turning the boat into a love nest (will forgo the mirrored ball spinning from the tower, shag carpeting, and Barry White blaring from the tower speakers), but after all these years - gotta be prepared for those rare opportunities with the missus.;)

The owner must be fun to play roulette with.... Placing everything on 40 blue !!!!!

As the boat searching goes Haugy there is only slim pickins..... Looks like I might be running the Comp for another season.

Haugy, don't be afraid of the black/blue color (can't comment about the rest of that boat). Been working on the cosmetics on my hull again. Actually went down to 400 grit on the "black" & it looks much better now - still not quite as black as my powder coated trailer, but I'd definitely call it black now.

Although, that MO Salt looks like it has red/pink accent stripes above & below the rubrail where mine is black. Could just mask & paint those pretty easy.

I have a 1989 Black Saltare I should sell......the last kid is graduating from high school and moving out in May. I don't think the boat will see much action with my husband and me :)

It has a black wakeboard tower and a custom canvas cover. The seats are out of it right now.....they are at the upholsterer's getting all new vinyl. If you are still in the market I can take some pictures.

I am in Guntersville, Alabama......

I talked to the guy yesterday about this boat. It seems really nice and Im going to go take a look at it today, maybe Ill buy. However, he emailed me lastnight and said the 3 of the 4 motor mounts on the port side were stripped(loose) but the starboard side were fine. Im kind of skeptical about it, but the rest of the boat seems so nice that for $3500 it would still be a good deal. Any thoughts?

For $3500...you can redo the stringers or even get them done and still have a good deal...if you can get him down to $300 because you know the stringers are going (loose mounts is a dead giveaway) it's a steal!

Yes, I was talking about your boat. And like I said, I will be the first to admit it if I'm wrong. And I was so wrong it's embarrassing. I mean really embarrassing.

I apologize for calling you out like that. With so many scammers these days I'm first to judge, then maybe trust. And I judged wrong. My apologies, and I will edit that post.

You should have sent me those pics first. :D That thing looks good. If you aren't totally pissed at me, I'm sending you a PM about that boat. I understand if you chose to tell me to F-off.

That's a nice blue one. They are normally beat to hell in the Dark blue, and all that's left are the light blue ones. I'll call him shortly to get more pics.

And again, as I've seen already. If someone sees a boat they want in here, jump on it. This is not a post for only me. Yes, my offer still stands, that if someone here posts up a Saltare and I buy it I"ll give them cash. But there have been some great boats posted here, and I'm glad some other users are able to get them.

SuperSaltair, we need to exchange phone numbers. Might make it easier to communicate.

Ahh... I didn't even look further into those pics, you are right that is the Pirata. Did you try site mashing? There is a website called: www.jaxed.com. There you can select boats, then select make and model and it will pull up all of your selections from Craigslist, Ebay etc. I have found a lot of good boats on there including mine. (1993 Sunsport, which I'm selling also) I suggest you try that it works really well.

Good Luck!

I hope so man. While that is a great boat. I'm and old dog captain. The newest I will go is 93-94. I love the style too much. Plus I have a rule for my shop. It's called the 21-and-up club. All toys must be at least 21 years old. :) But I'll bend it for a great boat.

This boat I'm eyeballing is perfect for me, just hope that the buyer can't get financed.

Hell, this post has been great in helping out. You guys friggin rock.

Usually when it is time things will fall into your lap. Seems like you have the ball in your court now, cash in hand. This way you can get the best deal possible.

I called about a Sunsport this Am. The seller said he had a deposit on the boat and was waiting for financing approval from the buyer. Worst of all the boat was under the 6k mark.

You're losing it. :D I was ready to pull the trigger on a 93 white Saltare in Texas, but it was sold already. And that thing looks NOTHING like a 99 Launch.

I had a 1990 red Saltare found, and was ready to pick it up. It went online, and I called the dealer the next morning and they already had a deposit on it. The salesman figured he wouldn't be able to get it because they couldn't get him financed. Call today, and he borrowed money from his family and got the Saltare. Damnit, so the guy can't pay his bills, and borrows money to get a rare jem. Yeah, I'm a little bitter. It was my ideal Saltare. I'm a little bummed.

i think if i were haugy i'd be after the 93 sunsport posted here...chachi i think?

painting a boat has to be easier/cheaper than splitting it in 2, etc. end up with whatever color he wants and no wood. reading boards of bigger, saltwater boats lots of them prefer paint over gel. some of these 80's boats are asking crazy prices too when you add in what's probably inevitable from the looks of the hulls and interiors.

I looked at Chachi's boat, and while it's a nice option, the trailer that came with it would never have survived the trip. There is no way. Too much risk.

And I am no longer in the hunt. But I think this would be a good thread to help people find Saltares out there. I counted 3 members who got boats from this thread alone.
