I'm thinking of picking up Perfect Pass for my Saltare. The only thing that worries me is cutting the hole for the paddle wheel. Like most boat owners I have an aversion to cutting a hole in the botom of my boat. I worry about getting the location just right and cutting the hole properly without messing anything up. Unfortunately since i ride on a river than can have strong tidal currents GPS may not be practical, and I would like to have a water temp gauge too.

Has anyone done perfect pass with the paddle wheel? Where did you put the paddle wheel? How did you cut the hole? 5200 for sealant? Any tips or tricks?

Also considering finding a place that has done these installs before but not sure what's in my area or how much they would charge.

No Perfect Pass for me (yet...), but gonna be adding a paddlewheel for the new speedo's in my Salt too.

I crawled under a bunch of boats at the boat show this year & paddlewheel placement seems to be all over the board. Jim @ Viper & Perfect Pass tech both recommended ~6" outward from the rear turn fin. Haven't drilled the hole yet, but makes sense - center of the boat (less affected by turns), always wet, & in a clean stream of water.

Gonna cut it with a hole saw, seal the cut edge of the hole with epoxy, & then mount with 5200. Good luck & let us know how it goes...

There are lots of these threads on WakeWorld. PP also has advice on where to place the hole. Sorry i cant help more but that's where I would look. And post back so I can learn what you find out.

Well I completed the PP install this morning Hopefully water test this weekend.

I drilled the hole with a 2" abrasive hole saw, not a standard sharp tooth jobby. Worked pretty good. Before drilling the hole I drilled a small pilot pole form inside to confirm the location was good inside and out. It was. I tried doing the magnet thing but even with rare earth the magnets weren't strong enough to tell me anything. I used the fast cure 5200 sealant. Couldn't find any referenec to a difference in strength and I want to be on the river this weekend, so 24 hr cure vs. 7 day cure took the win. All in all a pretty easy install.

This should tell it pretty well.

I’m wondering did you have a beer before you drilled the hole or after. Nice install. You are going to wonder how you went so long without it. A little tip you will need to coach the new drivers a couple of time be for you get behind the boat .

Got out yesterday and PP works great, holds speed within a couple tenths. Usually when riding I'll be signalling faster/slower often but not once did I even think about speed being a problem. I noticed no fluctuations behind the boat, aside from turns, and fluctuations by the paddlewheel speedo were only a couple tenths of a MPH.

The only problem is when turning around sharply to the right it wants to take off and though the paddlewheel reads slow it feels like it's accelerating hard. It doesn't do this when turning around sharp left, it gives a more steady pull. I figure on hard right turnarounds the paddlewheel is coming out of the water and giving a slower reading. If I were to do it again I would place the paddlewheel closer to centerline and farther back.
