At what temp will the indmar 340hp operate at? My 22ssv runs around 185 to 195.

Depends on the thermostat, but that seems reasonable to me.

The thermostat controls the temp. Most themostats are 160 (unless I'm losing my memory)

my 2008 22ssv 340 hp runs between 161 and 163 whatever I am doing with it.

mine runs about 160 - 165, but can sneak up to 175 if i shut her down to idle when its hot, 185 -195 seems a little hot , surprised your dash screen hasn't rung off on ya.....what year do you have, do you have dark grey plastic fittings or brass fittings off your exhaust manifold?

When I had my '08 w/340 CAT-ETX it never ran above 165, even on a 110 degree day. I think 185-190 is a little bit on the hot side. You might want to consider replacing the thermostat, it could be defective. When was the last time you replaced your impeller? If it has been more than 100 hrs/2 years I would also do this. You could have a partially destroyed impeller plugging up your cooling system. If you remove the impeller and its missing veins you have to fish out all the remains or else you will continue to have cooling issues.

I replaced the impeller and the old one looked ok with no damage. I may go ahead and replace the thermostat. Is there a way to flush the engine block. It is a 2004.

The only thing I would add is that I know some of the newer motors (meaning later than 2000?) run hotter than the older motors, or at least that is the case on autos I think because of emissions requirements. For instance, my 2005 Chevy truck runs a little hotter than my old '93. I don't know if that's the case on marine engines though. The older 351s run at 160.

Yeah..I played with this for a long time. With a 180 thermo mine would jump to 210-220 and would scare the crap out of me. Then tried a 160, still to hot so I ordered a 140 degree, now it tops out at 180-190. THIS IS IMPORTANT TO YOU ALL!! My operating temp now is 140-160 and so now I run a colder weight oil, synthetic 5-30w I think it is. A lot of oils dont start working well untill they hit 180 degrees so if your running around the lake in the 150-160 degree range?? Is it working? I wasnt comfortable and was worried about that so I swithched my oil for that range. Just my .02 cents..which in todays market, I owe you money! lol. Jet

check your upper exhaust manifold fittings , they could be letting air into the system allowing for increased temps

But the water flow is lake-pump-eng-exh-exit? Right..so how could that raise the water temp?? Make the engine work harder? My high temps were AFTER I cut the engine off. If it were running at 190? after turning it off it would slowly creep up 10-15 degrees in like 5 mins. The temp is taken at the neck or front of the eng and I know Its kind of a false reading because the water is stuck inthe neck but it still scared me.

If your car has a real temp gauge watch it after you shut it off. It'll rise 10*-30* depending on engine, temp, and ambient temp. Engine damage can begin to happen around 230*, so that's the magic number to watch for.

Also note, oil temp will always be hotter than coolant temp, especially on a boat as the engine is workign hard and putting a lot of pressure and friction on the oil since it's always under a heavy load.

As for thermostats. I've heard boats use low temp thermostats mainly due to salt content. 160* and up and the salt can crystallize. So in fresh water 180* shouldn't be a problem, but in salt or bracking it could be. I have always run a 145* in my boats after hearing that since I'm usually in slightly brackish water and occasionally salt if I go far enough down river.

I would recommend calling Indmar and asking them what temperature thermostat you should have in that motor. Try and order the OEM that came on the engine. Thermostats can become gummed up over time and not open fully which is what might be happening in your case.

I would first verify the true operating temp, not by what the dash gage says but the more accurate ECM sending unit. Current production gages are usually reading around 185* but actually the engine is running around 165*. I have seen this on new Mastercrafts as well as new Supras. If you acutally warmed the engine up to 205* an alarm will be posted as well as a trouble code stored. A quality scan tool will be able to read all engine peramiters as well as the history, such as max rpm achieved, max temp, ect. Al
