Ignition System Parts Questions

I am doing my 600 hour maintenance on a 2006 Supra 22SSV. I would like to convert over to MSD rotor, cap, wires and ignition coil.

Here are the MSD part numbers I am considering:

Cap and Rotor - MSD 8017 $50

My question is, there is a bit of a difference in price and I was wondering if it is ok to use the MSD parts as replacement parts. MSD is a well-known manufacture of ignition parts but they do not market these parts as Marine ready.

I have seen MSD parts used on high end race boats. However those types of boats are no comparison to mine.

P.S I will be running the AC Delco Platinum plugs at the recommended .60 gap.

personally I would run marine parts manufactured by a reputable company. Marine parts are made to last in wet/humid/moist environments. Not sure what distributor you have but probably a pretty standard SBC cap and rotor.

Have a look at Mallory's marine catalog and see if you can find what you need. They don't list cross reference for Indmar, but if it's common SBC stuff then I'm sure you can find something to work. I've used Mallory components in my boats and cars and have yet to be disappointed.

As far as I know the only thing that is truly ignition proof is the distributor itself. Personally, I feel that the distributor is high enough up in the engine bay that it would be the least likely point for a spark to detonate. Everyone can decide what their level of comfort is, but I run straight automotive BBC parts in my boat.

i am NOT a fan of marine parts. Grab a part of the local shop shelf, print marine on it and it went from $39 to $89! Not falling for that. My boat engine is dryer and does less hrs of work than my big truck. The 3 things that need to be marine are fuel pump, alt and your girfriend. If it fits on a mustang and makes it go faster it will work on your boat!

Hahaha. Well I got my bases covered then on the other essential parts :)

Well now that I have received all my parts I can share my some details.

The distributor cap and rotor were an exact match to the original parts.

The MSD spark plug wires are defiantly thicker and the boots seem to be thicker as well. The part number I ordered and linked above is not the correct part however. The longest wire is too short. I am exchanging the wires for this part

I did flip through the Mallory catalogue but could not locate any parts for Indmar or Chevy engines. I am sure they are probably embedded somewhere in the 2000 page catalogue.

I will post a reply once I get the new part so that if someone else stumbles across this thread they will know what works and what does not.

I decided to leave the factory coil in place. If it's not broke dnt fix it :)
