it's up by the driver's left knee, by the horns, under the dash. it looks like a couple of chips on a circuit board with 4 little trim pots, all epoxy coated. The big white connector in the middle of the picture has a socket it would fit into on the circuit board, but is not currently plugged in.

Any ideas what it is or was?

Not entirely sure what the actual board is...but that black cylinder appears to be some kind of warning buzzer.

Yup, that's the warning buzzer card. Some work, some don't, some are just a nuisance. If it's not hooked up, make sure all your gauges work and monitor them regularly.

Ah, cool. Does it impact the warning lights too? Or just the buzzer?

yes, the idiot lights are tied to the card as well.

Mine failed within the first year and has been unplugged since. I didn't think it was worth the trouble to get it working right since it has full gauges .

As long as you actually look at your gauges...it's not a huge deal. However; it has saved my butt a few times when i became complacent about looking at things like engine temp and oil pressure. You'll have to remind yourself that you NEED to look, but once you do it should be second nature.
