Has anyone ever used something like Rhino Liner to paint their trailer? Is it worth the extra money? How does it look? Did you spray or paint it on?

I have not used a bedliner type coating but have used rustoleum "hammered" paint on several trailers. LOVE IT! The funky finish looks good and hides any/all blemishes. Definitely worth looking into.

Dshaff, Are you saying don't do bedliner or don't do hammered paint? Everyone is certainly entitled to an opinion. I just wasn't sure which you were referring to...? And I'm kinda curious what others think of the hammered paint since i haven't seen it done much. Not trying to change the thread, just curious... Thanks.

Who makes the Por 15?

I think a surface prep would be more critical with a DIY Rhino job. Otherwise might be prone to chipping/flaking from road debris. I don't have much experience with that stuff, but the few homemade jobs I've seen looked pretty bad. As will all refinishing jobs, the real key is in surface prep for best results and maximum longevity.

I'll second the hammered paint option. Used it on my friend's old jet boat trailer last year. The hammered finish really hides the pits and imperfections on the old beat up trailer. It was a quick, down & dirty job - IIRC, 2 quarts with a spray gun after a light sanding and paint thinner wipe down, but still looks good this year. The "black" is more of a "gunmetal gray" when dry. It's a Rustoleum product, so some rust inhibitor properties. Sure, there are better ways to do it "right", but pretty good results with minimal investment in time or money.

NO!! to the rhino trailer. Its a bumpy surface material and would look really wierd..just can spray it for a plan-b if you cant get a spray booth job. Im right behind you, i want to get it done before my boat is ready to come out of the garage. Take pics so we can see.

Do not do Rhino lining. Nothing says lazy and cheap to me more than that. I can't stand it on anything except a truck bed. It will fade, and look like crap. Do not ruin your trailer like that. And I have a Rhino'd truck bed. It looks awful for show. It works for what it was designed for.

Here is what my trailer started out as. A Mastercraft 190 trailer that didn't fit my boat properly. I stripped it, redid the bunks and carpet, and then ground all the old paint off. I then put a primer coat on, 3 coats of red automotive spray paint, and 2 coats of clear. It looked great, was VERY cheap, and held up well. The most expensive part was the new LED tail lights that looked awesome, and got compliments. I also put some new traction mats on it from Hydro-turf. It's called B-side (which is their defect sheets). New ski poles that say Supra, and you would never guess it wasn't factory.

All it takes is the time to do it right.

I was refering to spray bedliner.. LineX is awesome and color stays black but it rhino is nasty.. turns brown over time! Hammer Paint covers anything and does have a neat texture..

Por 15 is a 1 stage paint thats Shines and is self leveling.. Buy a cheap spray gun and spray it! Por 15 cost $100+ a gallon or just go with a basecoat/clear coat.. Don't go with that stuff they got at autozone that you just poor it into the gun and spray.. I did that with my trailer and im Definitly not impressed.. Ill be stripping it!

I think I'm going to get a couple of spray cans mixed to match from the PPG store and I'll use that to touch-up for now. Most of the trailer paint is really not all that bad.

Yep, the good quality spray paint from O'reilly's. I know, it seems like it wouldn't work. But the quality has a lot to do with the preparation. I had the trailer very smooth, with a good coat of primer. Then I used tack cloth before I painted to pick up any primer dust.

The traction mats are Hydroturf. You can call up and get a sheet of the diamond pattern (like mine) and get the "B side" which is their sheets with minor defects. Which I still haven't figure out what the defect is. It's cheap, and you get a ton. It's also really soft! It's so nice to sit on the platform and not hurt your knees climbing up, or sitting down. I get a lot compliments on it because it's not slick AT ALL, but it's comfortable to walk on. These new platforms have no traction on them, and are slick as hell.

My major fix for the summer is my boat trailer as well. I haven't started the project yet but was going to go with RustOleum. Thoughts?

Should work fine. But the durability is in the prep work. Prep it right, and that rustoleum will do well.

Invest in a de-scaler air hammer attachment. Cheap and work great !!! They will remove a flakey paint and make it ez to refinish.

I too hate bedliner spray!!! Looks grey after time from the sun and not intended for show trucks. Hammered finish is great too!!! Anyone ever tried adding more black to the can to make the silver less contrasting.
