my block has quite a few cracks the heads are being tested next week and was wondering if this would work as a replacement.

Should work but at a minimum you'll want to put a marine cam in it and put on the deeper oil pan. While you're in there you might as well replace the oil pump, too.

If you are just planning on using the block and doing a rebuild -- it would be a great starting point.

It's a much older 454. So you will HAVE to re-cam it like Wotan.

Plus, it's likely that it's not the high strength 4-bolt main. Even as a 454 there were quite a few low power 454's that weren't 4-bolt mains.

Me? I'd try and find a mid 80's 454, they can be had for the same price.

I'm sure the engine guys will chime in soon enough, but this block should be the Mark IV. Gen V blocks weren't introduced until the early 90s (and not marinized until a little after that.)

Searching by the casting number it looks like it could be either a 2-bolt or 4-bolt main. I'd check with the seller -- he seems savvy about it.

It is a Gen IV, but I was more or less just telling him to find a newer version. It may be the same engine, but 10 years of additional wear or sitting can do a number on an engine.

i think everything on the engine i have now is good except the fact that the block is cracked. heads are being tested. We just bought the boat and have had a bunch of recent expenses that i wasnt counting on so i am trying to get it running as cheap as possible and as soon as possible for now. I know its better to do it right the first time around but im not going to miss out on this season. would you guys ever even think about using a 2-bolt main?

Unless the cam has been changed from a stock truck cam and has a lot of overlap then why would there be any need to change the cam? There's nothing special about a marine cam.

As for other factors for early vs late BBC I can't comment except all BBC are inferior to the 385 series Ford. I do believe Chevy kept the same bell pattern and crank flange so if that is the case you should be able to use any 454 as a simple bolt in deal. Personally I would rebuild whatever I got but that's just me. I would recommend at least pulling a couple main and rod caps to get an idea of condition. Compression test would also be a good idea before putting it in the boat.
