Commence Jet's argument that 2 is better than 5....lol :)

There is no way that could be good for performance.

I'll stick to my good ole 3-blade. I've got 3 of them in my shop, so I won't be buying a new one anytime soon.

Haugy, with three props lying around, you could always beat the market and slap all three together inline, sort of like a Volvo-Penta on a serious amount of steroids and run a 9 blade prop. Put that in gear with the 454 powering it and you have one serious blender. Haha!

I once had 2- 4 blade props with variable pitch.

How about a variable pitch boat prop?

You had a Mitsubishi? I give you mad props, no pun intended, for owning and flying one of those suckers.

yeah. MU2. Back in the 80's. Fun but challenging to fly.

I ordered some stuff from Summit recently and they sent me some crazy 5 blade razor in there. Tried it and don't like it. I'll stick with my 3 blade.

Oh wait, we're talking about props not razors... In any event, I'll stick with my 3 blade.

Hah! I actually received a 5-blade razor in with an order from Dennis Kirk last week. I thought it was a pretty odd promotion!

Now that was one big A$$ Prop!!! That is an interesting concept though! I know that the prop hub and shaft would have to be larger, but why not add variable pitch props? It would make one boat truly the "do all" boat. YOu could have hole shot, and trim the blades for top end to pull a water skier or wake boarder.

I have also seen a boating company that has two speed transmissions. I have wandered why other manufacturers have not gone to that. At least when you are running accross the water you can drop your RPMs some.

I always wondered why an automatic transmission couldn't be mated to an indb boat. Imagine having an overdrive...

Spoilerons have a tendency to make fine course adjustments tricky. I second the hearing thing, those Garret motors sure are loud, fuel efficient but way too loud for my taste.

Because overdrive is actually only .75:1. Where your props are already at 1:1 or 1.23:1.

If you put an auto in it would start out at 3.23:1, and with these motors and boats you could barely move in first gear. The only way to do it would to put an overdrive gear of .50:1 on your boat transmissions. Some rockcrawlers put an aftermarket overdrive on their rigs so they can get down a highway without running 4300rpm. It's a clutch driven system that you can engage on the fly by letting off the throttle engage it, and go.

The problem is with these boats, if you let off the throttle you better hurry to get it into overdrive before you're off plane again, and then the motor is really working to get back up to speed. MB tried the two-speed transmission and had some moderate success with it, but the gearing wasn't that beneficial.

Seen quite a few threads recently of some of our other toys that are not Supras, thought I would contribute to that trend.

This is "music" to my ears... Way too much fun with the L-39. I wasn't on this particular flight. My friend Greg was flying this day.

I was thinking of something like the GM 4 speed overdrive automatic transmission. With 4 speeds and a wide rpm range, these boats, or cruising boats, might be capable of a much higher top speed at more economical engine rpms.

I think MB boats offer a transmission. It is very strange to hear a boat shift while you are riding, but it seemed to work well...

You wouldn't want a wide gear spread. Nowhere near enough torque to make it useful. 2 speed is plenty, and you'd want the ratios to be pretty close. Basically like changing your prop a couple inches of pitch on the shift. Too much spread would give useless gears down low, too much of a RPM drop on shift, and not enough torque to pull in top gear. Aside from that, overdrive would probably be a bad idea. Top gear in a boat should be either reduction or direct.
