2005 22SSV won't engage transmission

Was out with the family today cruising about 25mph when all of a sudden the motor sounded like it went back into neutral. The engine just starting reving up. So now the boat won't engage the transmission. I played with the throttle to make sure the neutral button on the throttle wasn't engaged. When looking down by the vdrive I can see where the throttle cable engages the shifter by the transmission and I can tell its moving as you move the throttle. When I move the throttle I don't ever here it engage the transmission where when everything is working you can hear it.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?
