lively
04-03-2012, 03:35 PM
yeah man i got it off ebay for 5.95 yard .. i did my dog house and it took some intricate template cutting to get the welt cord to line up with the body lines ... but ill save some
foam for when your ready ... I rebuilt all of my seats and using the old foam with some new foam as well ... just find your colors you like and i got the new singer 3500 sewing
machine with dual needles and welt foot attachment ... let me know ! (beer/girls/ but wheres the camera ?) lol

Ob- I sent the interior to get done by my buddie James , I wanted back support so the whole middle section and seat base acts as a flap to clean and add support An so fort , so ya it removes but still attached to the bottom .

Jet - yeah man I gave up , with out a walking foot sewing machine the vynil will not feed right , so I sent it off but he gave me a great price and it's I'n lewisville if ur interested ... He is doing the whole boat for 1200.00

Wiatowski- get a photobucket account and upload from phone or Pc and copy the [img] code and paste directly to the reply box , only 4 are allowed I'n one post ..

I'll update more when it's painted and interior is done .. Thanks for the kudos

I have a couple of questions about Your paint. Is the etching primer that You purchased an epoxy? Also is Your painter priming the gelcoat , or did He sand it down to fiberglass? I'm seeing a lot more automotive finishes on boats these days , and I like the looks. Should be less maintenance than gelcoat right?

Jeff

lively
05-02-2012, 10:49 PM
jeff- Look up super marine paint {sm1000}

I washed and de greased and sanded most of the boat with 320 grit , just to break down , then i made some minor stress crack repairs with a razor blade and body filler .. he is going to finish the rest

The paint itself is a one part hybrid epoxy resin with pigmet of choice , it's literary 3 resins in one but cures with oxygen instead of hardener ...

also the etching primer is a must with any paint on any fiberglass product , this paint hardens like hard enamel so if its scratched or scuffed you can sand it out and buff back to a shine . personally i have never used this paint and have took a risk at spending all this money with no prior results , but I have great faith it will turn out great ...

less maintenance ... idk ? but deff wont chalk up or go dull . and i also got two different etching primers white for the (White/ Grey) and red oxide for the (orange)

project_sunsport
05-03-2012, 09:56 AM
Thanks . That's what I was looking for. I've seen a lot of "high end" boats done with HOK , but I haven't heard anything good about HOK's epoxy primer. Since the gelcoat is known to retain the mold release agents and wax , I was looking for something that is known to adhere.
Yeah I better get busy with the razor blade and filler. There's probably a hundred holes since I took all the teak off.

by chance, if your Supra has the 351 ford, did you replace your starter motor with a high torque motor, and if so, can you tell me the model number and where you found it, at what cost? I want to replace mine and going on-line is not only confusing but the "new" prices range from $50 to $200. As you might imagine, I'm a bit confused.

thanks

thanks Ibagby- no man I did not replace my starter , it is a remanufactured from oriellys auto parts .. And it has a
Lifetime warranty , I mean yeah it stinks to replace every couple years , but hey pay once use it forever lol ... One thing I have
Learned about ford starters or any starters for that matter , just crank for 3 seconds , if engine don't fire then you ain't maintaining it like you should .. That's my two cents brother man ..

i bought the paint supermarine paint .com SM1000 is the paint code .. i have heard mixed reviews about this paint but it clearly said apply thin coats and no more than 3ml thick on each coat .. so i just think he laid it on to thick and it only tacked up and then he was impatient cause he was trying to make it (happen) lol it really looks good besides
that but i think i would have used a different paint next time ... just really took a risk i guess .. o well you live and you learn ...

I hope you have not paid in full !! I can't see why they have to wait till next weekend to fix the issue. With the right hardeners I would think 36hours would be plenty of time to scuff the areas down and repaint.

As for the colour scheme, at least you are different.

I'm sure the purists are rolling over, but kudo's to you for making it uniquely yours. I personally don't care for the color orange, but it's a stunner - especially considering what you started with. Hope you get it all worked out & keep up the hard work.

I think the orange looks great! This whole boat is going to look super cool.

lively
05-15-2012, 10:48 AM
Just a few things .. The orange was the only part that messed up and that is the only color that is going to get re sprayed , I
Looked at the color that he said he would shoot and I like it better than that copper tone that I have on there now .. It's just a hint lighter and with orange now being the primer it should pop pretty good .. I am waiting to let it dry as this paint has no hardner it's just paint lol .. Next time I think I'll use something allittle easier .. I mean my painter painted his 30' chapp with house of colors
Auto paint and it looks amazing ! But longevity ? Idk ... Regardless it's going back this Friday evening and getting fixed .. I have
Cooled down enough to speak with him this morning and so I plan to get my rudder and prop I'n tonight and some other Misc

How much was the upolstry work?Dude, look up Koch Upholstery in Rockford, yeah it might be a hike for you but they beat the pants off of everyone else on price and the quality is great!!! They did my entire boat except for the two side panels and the captains seat. I was out the door for all that work for about 1/4-1/3 the cost quoted by all the other shops in our area.

Something doesn't look perfect with regards to the colour blends in the paint work. I have been thinking this for a few days now. I think the problem is in the flow of the white to grey to orange on the side of the gunwhale portion. I like the colours and the interior a ton but the transition in colours is bothering me. Perhaps it needs a narow band or orange towards the front in the crease under the rubrail and eliminate the grey on the lower section of the gunwhale.

Nows the time to chage things up a tad since they have to redo the orange anyhow....

At last I have figured it out.... Run a orange stripe from the nose to the rear section inside the ribbed section just under the rub rail. Using the same distance from the rub rail to the stripe have it slice in front of the charcoal section. This making a white, orange, charcoal and back into orange slice. Is the orange in the piping in the interior the same shade as the rear section?? If not then the added stripe can be the same colour adding continuty.

See my problem was the boats interior screams fast but the exterior slowed it down. I think with the added stripe will make it look slimmer and stream lined...

I have the orange wire in the main harness ran to the signal lug on volt meter and a power wire coming off the same lug to the fuse panel for my switched
Accessories.

So with the extra orange wire I checked continuity from output on alt from harness as well
as the extra one and they both ring out so they are deft spliced at some point. .. so
I still need to fine out if it is actually charging ...but my alt has a one wire output (orange) and one ground

When I put the orange wire directly on the + for the seloniod it pegs the volt meter acting like its grounding
other than that it runs and turns off by key and gauges are working besides the oil press .... any input on this
Would help me a lot ..

Yeah idk I might have wired it wrong .. lol I talked to Vince at skidim. And if u have an amp meter that is how its to be wired
but in my case that with a volt meter it goes to the input for the breaker and the little red wire goes to the postive lead comeing in.
And that is what charges the battery but I don't get it ... I did that and the damn volt meter still pegged out .. oh well ill look at it when I

Reasons why boats are better than women:

1: They don't get jealous when you look at other boats.
2: They don't complain when you tie them down.
3: They don't get angry when you look at boat magazines and boat pictures.
4: They come with an instruction manual
5: They have an "on" and an "off" switch.

I plan to lake test Sunday morning .. Have a question though I aligned my couplers and put in gear on trailer and rev to 2000 and had a small vibration .. Will the thrust and being in water cancel that out ? I plan to tram motor more at lake but just wanted some insight . Cause I wAs told its a self aligning cause it's all connected to rubber . ( mounts / cutlass ect..)
What do y'all think ?

Okie Boarder
06-12-2012, 12:26 PM
Were you running it in gear and spinning the shaft? That may be what you were hearing / feeling. The cutlass bearing needs to be wet or else it makes quite a bit of noise and vibration.

sybrmike
06-12-2012, 01:09 PM
Man, you are knocking this one out in a hurry. Looking good.

Yes, it'll make noise and rumble in gear on the trailer. Careful running it in gear on the trailer - you can burn up the cutlass bearings in a hurry. If you've got a dripless seal, the flush water will help keep it wet but still generally not a good idea.

Good idea to recheck the alignment on the water - things can settle a bit differently from the trailer. I rechecked mine on the water, but it was the same.

No biggie , I reseal this week ..

Timing is off a little . Popping under full load , I remove distributor when I painted block
And put her a tdc and aligned at 0 degrees .. Just need to bring my timing light and mess with it a bit ..

I did not feel vibration in shaft or see it move in any direction ..

Trans held strong ! And did what it is supposed to do ..

Question : speedo - that brass pipe with the input and output for the pressure line .. Is that a one way dill ?
Are they installed a certain way for the speedo to pick up ?

I didn't get a video , cause I was so excited that I have a floating rig again , but I will upload some pics shortly ..

Also how it did, any signs of stress so i know to beef it up a bit or if i should be good with what u used. Thx

I used 4 4x4 x12 lumber with 2x4 through bolted for cross support, top is not heavy just awkward and long .. get a few buddies to help pull it and set on
ground, if u pull engine with it, I would deff beef the cross braces up and through bolt everything

Looking good! The only thing that (to me) sticks out on that boat is the cheesy registration numbers. Go drop a few bucks at 3dlettering.com and upgrade those!!

Man is the boating season already over ? well i am thinking about some new things to putt on in the winter ... Xtab from bennet / New tower / decals/ intake and TB injection (junk yard special :) ) but here is "LIVELYHOOD" http://i1189.photobucket.com/albums/z433/lively86/44A0E2A8-F793-42C5-B82B-F2763F1AB9AC-806-000001308B17E2C6.jpg

and if you look to the top right of my tower .. that my friends is a weak weld that broke .. lol that tower is weak as it is anyway ...

those of you that have towers .. do they sway when your underway ? or is it more rigid and firm ?

On my Monster tower(MT-1) the left rear leg keeps coming loose at the top swivel that allows the tower to fold down... Havent heard back from them yet about a fix. Wish I had waited and gotten a Titan. I think they look alot better, and 1 pin to fold.

+1 for the Titan. I put one on my Salt & it does not move. I've towed everything from wakeboards, 3 person tubes, and even comp slaloms & it doesn't flex. Yeah, I know tubes from the tower are supposed to be a no-no, but I reinforced the heck outta the backside of the mounts (17 oz glass over 3/4" ply). Also, the Titan uses heim joints at the deck joint so the loads are transferred with minimal torque. On the down side, I have to remove the front wishbone completely to fit under my garage door header. Also the design makes it difficult to fit a functional bimini (planned winter project). Oh, and the tubes are stainless so drilling for tower speakers takes good quality drill bits.

The look isn't for everyone - but here's some pics mounted on my Salt for reference

Mike - that last photo is interesting. My Salt doesn't kick up that much water when idling, so maybe my water flow is less? I don't have any temperature issues, so I'm not sure what the harm might be.

p.s. I like how you said +1 for the Titan. I'll just pretend you meant that personally for me. :p

I bet that is not a "low" idle in that picture. I know on my comp with the baby engine, starting and then a high idle resonates pretty hard off of the composite platform I have. I have a feeling that if I had a teak platform like both of you that mine would look like that doing a high idle.

I noticed the same thing. The SuperTrapps can be oriented to face down or face up. My guess is that his were faced up. It makes quite a difference.

SuperTrapps radiate around in a 360 degree pattern however, Mike is running flappers I believe.

That's a good point. Could be the difference between trapps and flappers. My trapps are 360 degrees and there's no way to point them any direction. Maybe there's more than one type of trapp?

Weird! My trapps had holes in them on the end cap that only covered about 120degrees of the surface.

Yeah, mine don't have any holes. See attached.11300

Ok, so I don't have the pictures on my phone or computer when I removed my trapps but I think we are all talking about the same thing, just not the same part/area. The pucks that are sandwiched between the end cap and the transom are where the exhaust all come out. I have a short video clip of my boat running with the trapps before I removed them. It happens fast but you can see when there is a surge of water coming out the exhaust that it flows out in all directions.

Those look to be an "after market" mod done by a previous owner. All the classic supras that I see in lifts on our lake that still have the trapps all look like the ones I took off and the ones that Rob showed as well. That sure is interesting though, perhaps they were trying to "open" the exhaust up some.

TitanTn

Yeah, that looks similar to someone drilling out the baffle on motorcycle exhaust pipes to "open it up." That's definitely not stock.

I bet that nets an extra 5 HP per hole drilled at least! :D

Hah! I never realized that. Pretty sure I sent them to another board member so they are probably still in use.

And they definitely made a difference as far as how the exhaust was exiting and the water was being splashed/churned.

ha ha .. I thought the trapps were ok at first but i like that sleek tip kinda look ...

winter projects :

hydro trim tab

new wake tower

more 6.5" speakers x4

custom Bimini top with racks , and beads for the tie -ups lol

I just threw that pic in to show the tower from another perspective. The exhaust bubbles are just more pronounced cause it's loaded with ~2400 lbs of ballast. FWIW - 800 rpm idle, flappers, and slatted teak platform.

Good luck with the winter projects, Lively - still hoping to get a trip or two in before I start on my winter list.

Congrats on the new baby Lively! I hope this won't keep you from working on the boat.

I've done some of those same upgrades this winter. Decals and LEDs. The changes are subtle, but it's something that at least I'll appreciate. What are you thinking about for decals?

can one of yall take a few pics of your captains seat layout .. what i am having an issue with is the doghouse front needs to be moved up about 1 inch, but my seat is almost to big and a real hassle getting in and out and everything else .. so i was thinking of just a bolster to lean/sit against to free up the space and add more accessibility ..

and also someone remind me how to upload videos .. i have a gopro hero 3 now and id like to take some HD videos for the forum and my thread

need some help .. i bought led strip lights RGB and each strip is 5 meters long .. since i redone my interior by hand i ready have no way to hide the leds and just show the light ..

trying to figure out what to do , i want to run some leds along the side panels i made but cant seem to figure out how to conceal how i mount them with a finished look for daylight outings ... any thoughts ?

I have an 86 Supra Sunsport Skier that I wont part with. However my kids want a tower. What did you decide on and where would you suggest getting one from.
I read every bit of your saga and am truly impressed with your rebuild effort. Way to go...
