I have and 87 ts6m and my boat starts up and runs fine but when I hammer on the gas to say pull someone out of the water it dies, unless I take off gradually. there is also a little gas that builds up under where the fuel enters and Ive tried to tighten it but cant seem to make it budge. would it be best to buy a new carb, get someone to rebuild, or could it be another problem? Thanks and Ill hang up and listen.

The stumble under acceleration could be because your float level is too low, and the carberator can not deliver enough fuel to keep up with demand. Or it could be because of wear on the internal parts of the carb. But it could also be ignition.

If your carb has not been overhauled in the last sevaral years, than I recomend you overhaul, just for grins. The carb needs to be periodically overhauled to keep it in top working order. Their is a chance that this will eliminate your stumble.

This is your carburator's overhaul kit: http://holley.com/703-47.asp
This is Holley's technical library: http://holley.com/TechService/Library.asp
This is an exploded view of the 4160: http://holley.com/data/TechService/Technical/4150%204160%20Exploded%20View.pdf
This is the float adjustment procedure for the 4160 (follow the Duracon (plastic) procedure): http://holley.com/data/TechService/Technical/4150%204160%20Exploded%20View.pdf

The rebuild is actually very intuitive, simply replace what you disasemble if the parts are found in the kit. The kits can come with extra parts meant for other carberators. The overhaul kit commonly retails for about $50-$75 at NAPA or other mainstream retailers. I have found them for $25 on Ebay stores.

Most likely the carb. Also check the points [if you still have them ] timing and advance weights.

It's likely your accelerator pump, a simple fix.

Do a search on youtube and you'll find several videos that show you how to rebuild and tune the carb. In the end, it's fairly simple. Also replace the fuel filter/water separator. Mine was full of mud even though the boat would start up just fine.

Does anyone know the correct idle speed and timing for the PCM 351 engine in the ts6m? I am rebuilding my carb this weekend and would like to check everything out and make sure its all set correctly. Thanks in advance1

I set my idle in neutral, engine warm to 900 rpm (on the hose). This results in 600 rpm in gear (in the lake), which is the value specified in the manual. Make your final adjustment in-gear, to 600 rpm.

The PCM manual for my '88 Mariah with a 351 engine specifies a timing of 10 degrees BTDC if you have a bolt-down distributor cap, and 6 degrees BTDC for a clip retained cap. The idle spec is 650-700 rpm in forward gear.

Check the linkage for the accelerator pump also. My linkage got rusted so it was not returning. I would get a squirt then the linkage would stick and not return to position to load for a second squirt. Removed the linkage arm and cleaned the post it pivots on.
