View Full Version : Wanting new trailer rims

I am thinking about over the winter to buy 4 new trailer rims and tires. The ones I have are chrome and are in good shape, but I am thinking I might add a newer style, although with all my winter projects I already have lined up and knowing how much those cost this might be on the back burner. Even if I do put it on the back burner, does anyone have a good suggestion on where to buy a set? Thanks!

Online is your friend. First decide on the tires you want to run. Most say pick the rim. But the tire is what makes the ride, and allows easy or difficult towing.

I prefere a 15-16 rim, no larger. This allows a better ride, and also as it's a trailer it does run a higher risk of catching a curb if I'm not paying attention. I'd hate to catch a curb with a nice set of 17-18's. With more sidewall it will ride better, and less chance of damage.

Go online, pick your tires first as they need to be done no matter what if they are bad. Then pick the rim size. There are very nice, clean, simple rims for around $70-90 if you look for a deal. While the rims do help with the boat, no need to go overboard. Simple clean 5-spoke rims can look great.

I wanted to upgrade to 15"'s when rebuilding my trailer, but ran across a deal for set of Al 14" (original size) on CL that I couldn't pass up. I agree with Haugy, stick with 15 or 16" so the tires still have some sidewall - better ride & less prone to damage (2 of my friends with newer boats and slick looking 17's have trashed rims on curbs). Just make sure the rim and tire size combo will fit in the fenders (overall dia, offset, etc.).

Just my personal two cents...stick with 15". You will have the sidewall for ride and longevity but still look decent. Also, keep it simple on the wheel design. A clean set of tasteful wheels looks 100 times better than blinged out wheels....I mean it is a trailer! haha. The boat is the main attraction anyway :)

Yah they wont be all blinged out....not my style anyway. I was thinking maybe like a set of 22's, with some big ol' AT tires...HA...I will probably start looking for a set at a good price. I have already got the paint ordered for my trailer, so as soon as it's warm enough....it will be looking good. Attached is a pic o whats on there now. 8217

I ended up having mine powdercoated at $30 a pop to update my look. Not sure if a black wheel is what you are looking for though.

I don't have any close ups but here you go. Factory 14" rim powdercoated

I like that a lot, I think it looks "custom" yet tasteful! haha. 22's though...now that would be somethin.

SupraSam, I like what you got on there now. If you're going to get rid of those wheels then I will be happy to take them off your hands :)

I've been thinking about starting a similar thread. I need to replace my wheels with some that are slightly dished or negatively offset to give clearance for my inner fender. I modified the trailer in order to lower the boat for better launching, but I had to cut my fenders and now the tires sometimes rub the inner fender. I'm finding that 14" trailer wheels with an offset are hard to find. Could I go with 15" rims, and a slightly lower profile tire maybe?

KG, you know what would look good on your rims? A very thin line drawn around the edge of the rim in red. Kind of a pinstripe circle. Just to accent the rims to match your boat. And by thin I'm talking no wider than 1/4 of an inch. Just to make them match and pop ever so slightly. I like the black rims, simple and clean. But, in my opinion, I think a small red pinstripe would really give them that slight "pop". Easy to do to. Jack up wheel. Mount paint brush to fixed block. Move block up against rim. Turn rim slowly. Use an eye-dropper to add more paint to brush. Turn till good coverage.

Just a thought. :D

Like this wheel, just without the blue:

To the OP:

Here are are the rims I'll be getting for my trailer. About $99 a rim.

I saw that white wheel picture and wasn't sure where it was going. I can see what you are saying and thats a pretty good idea. I'll def consider it.

However, I went crazy with the tire shine one evening and I also think some white walls would be sweet

And speaking of that white rim, I actually have it as a spare. This is what it looks like in action

I have been rolling on 18"s for the last 6 years and totally disagree about the ride. I think the 18"s with a lower profile tire actually ride better. Less bouncing. I have never had a sidewall blow out or any issue and I have towed 1500 miles each way. My old boat was just shipped to NY from Oregon and was trailered all the way there with no issues as well. 18" will also look much better.
I will 100% agree that you have way less sidewall and if you are the kind of guy that hits curbs don't do 18"s. You will mess up your rims big time. I have not curbed a wheel in years, but then again I am pretty careful and also only let select people go get my trailer at the ramp.
Also, be careful ordering wheels on the internet. Make sure they fit. They have to have the right offset, bolt pattern and have a large enough center hole to get the oil hub through. I would go to a local tire shop to be sure....

Said 18" setup that drove for or to ny look perfect. I have only backed it up in drive but I can speak for flex/ bounce in larger sidewalls.
I will have to pay more attn to curbs.

Not sure about the white walls. Although they do look sweet as hell on my bike.

Here's what I was thinking:

And I'm not knocking 18"s. They do look great. But factor in cost for wheels & tires in 18", they are pricey. And they do have a different ride. I've towed both, and you can really notice it. As for clipping corners, hell I've been towing for 18 years, and I still do it every now and then, it happens to the best of us. But I don't sweat it because it's just rubber. Which gives me peace of mind. Each to their own.

I second the response to not have "bling rims" on a boat trailer ... I have these on my trailer. I kissed a curb one time, and the damage was $400 or so
to get the thing straightened out. I did this on a big trip to Lake Powell - and it was bad enough that the tire was also destroyed by the time I got
back - the tire was a special order that was over $100 as well -

All that said, the curb I bumped, with a regular tire, would have just been the sidewall and probably would have been fine - but as this hit the RIM, it
did a mess of damage, and I wish I just had plain old rims/tires ... it may look good, but it raises the cost considerably -- and I can be sure I will NEVER
find the right replacement tire in the middle of Utah - like I could for my regular old boat tires - if I have a failure ...

When it's time to replace the tires I have - I will probably find it cheaper to buy 5 new rims and 5 new tires than to buy 4 new special order low profile
tires ..

I totally agree they are not for everyone.... In fact they are not for most, but I will always roll 18"s

used tire stores (you have to drive by) they always have xtra used rims for sale
CR list
Discount tire and Pep Boys. They always have off brand or generic rims for $49-$99ea

Seeing as how I have new rubber on mine, I'll be sticking with 14"s.

Please do. This isn't just for me. I've seen quite a few posters looking to redo their trailers this year.

That's a great price!!! Got any pics?

Getting the damper plate replacement done, getting vinyl work done, and then putting in a bimini. Other than some LEDs and a better sub box, that hopefully is it.

No v-drive this year as it just wasn't in the cards with the newborn. I wanted to have fun with him now, and worry about mods later.
