Yeah, without the walking foot its nearly impossible.
I finally got some time to work on the comp after a month and a half of work and family issues. I removed all the fiberglass on the bottom of the hull they used to try to laminate the new stringers to the old ones . What a mess , It would be easier if they had not tried to fix it. Well its all cleaned up and I started fitting the new stringers. I got the port side main and engine mounting structure cut and layed out . Lots of scribing and cutting but I am happy with the results the floor will fit perfect contacting each stringer as it should. I will have some time tomorrow I should be able to finish the port side .

Looking great Michael. I'm sorry you're having to go through this, but it makes me chuckle a little every time I see your thread subject - "fluff and buff." I can relate to starting a "small" project and suddenly it's a major overhaul.
Yea kinda like just freshening up an engine? The way I look at it is the end product always makes it worth the struggle. This was supposed to be my low budget I don't care beater boat . When I am done it will become another cherished high maintenance member of my stable . It will get all the TLC the others get.
Its been a while summer and that pesky work thing keeps getting in the way. The in last couple weeks I have made some progress. I cut the starboard side main and ground down the floor for the new stringers. I epoxied all stringers down and now I am ready for the fillets I should be glassing by the end of the week.

Looks good Michael, Stringers look solid. Have you decided if your going to reform or not?
I am leaning towards using 2'' blue foundation insulation boards . It can be cut to fit each cavity and still leave a little space next to the hull for water drainage.
I think that's a great idea! I'll probably never do mine, but I always thought that would be the way I'd do it. Blue foam is closed cell so it won't absorb water, and the density means it'll support the floor much better than pour in place would.
Everything looks great Michael, very impressive work!
I think that is a great idea with the foam boards. I know a couple of members also did a small drain through the stringers to allow water back into the centre. Were you planning on that too? That's one item I wish I did.
I have three in the secondary stringers and four in the mains also all the gussets have a notch where they butt up to the stringers. The stringers all have a notch in the rear where they attach to the transom . I figure any water that dosnt find a drain in the stringer will be able to find its way back and go into the bilge. I do think its all over kill after seeing the way it was put together from the factory and the fact it lasted 30 years I don't think me or the boat will be around for another 30.
Michael, Can I ask you what you budget is for this build, and what you have spent so far. Not including any mechanical/engine work.
Thats a good question I buy the material as needed and its been almost a year so far also since I do this kind of work for a living I have all kinds of material in stock. I would say for just the wood epoxy and fiberglass about 1000.00 Then you have to add carpet 400.00 and foam? I am doing a comp if your boat is bigger add . I would say you will be pretty safe with a 2000.00 budget with 0 labor. There is a lot of labor to do stringers I would not do it for less than 4-5k and I turn them down when asked .
While we're on the topic, why do you guys use epoxy? Nothing wrong with it, in fact it's far superior to polyester, but the whole boat is made out of poly, and epoxy is expensive. I've been building windsurfers since the '80s and have used exclusively epoxy, carbon and kevlar, but I think if I did a boat I'd be using poly. The only real issue with poly is the stink so if you're concerned about that, then I can see it.
I cover the wood and fiberglass with CPES then use epoxy to attach the stringers to the hull . The fillets are also epoxy mixed with a thickening agent. the stringers will be covered with fiberglass mat and poly.
I have been working on the comp but my camera broke and I couldn't get my phone to down load to my computer . All stringers are done , Fillets and glass capping done, Decking cut to fit cpes and glass done , Engine and trans in and aligned, Carpet cut to fit and main floor glued down. Here are the long over due pics.

I used the 4'x8'x2'' closed cell foam made for foundations . I cut the pieces to fit under the deck but not tight to the hull that way the water should be able to find its way to the bilge.

Should have all carpet done and top cap back on this weekend.
Great job Michael! When do you expect to water test the boat? Can't wait to see a water pic. That pylon looks ready for a stress test.
I can't wait to see the carpet completed, this will help me decide between Navy Blue or grey when I replace mine this winter.
Looking great Michael. I really like that foam solution. I'm not a big fan of adding foam, but I'm willing to rethink that position based on your approach.
I haven't been on here a lot over the last year or so...catching up. Boy, does that look familiar. Looking good!
Carpet is done top cap back on and riveted almost time for interior.

The end is in sight!
Yes Rob I am pretty happy with how it turned out so far. Now that the global warming has kicked in I will be working inside on the interior. I suspect it will be ready for sea trials in a couple weeks. Thanks to all you guys that watched and prevented me from being lazy and doing a half a$$ job this was supposed to be my beater boat . It will probably be for sale in the spring . I snagged a 92 composite comp recently and I don't need 2 comps.
His and hers Comps?
That blue really pops.
It will match the pipping on the interior vinyl . With a gray hull gray carpet is just too much gray.
Well at long last I am at the light at the end of the tunnel. Only a few odds and ends to do yet . Interior turned out good a lot of work but learned a ton . Next will be the 92 it should be easier . Here are the pics befor and after

Great Job!!! I love the blue and white interior.
So, now that you are done with "Her" Comp, when do you start working on "His" Comp?
Beautiful!
Gorgeous results. What you did under the floor is just as impressive, but I know doing that interior was not easy. Kudos!
Excellent work. You brought that boat back from the dead. I'm sure you are looking forward to spring time.
Very nice!
Looks really good! Great work and vision.
