2008 Moomba Mobius XLV

A new chapter begins. I sold my 1992 Supra Sunsport to get a 2008 Moomba Mobius XLV 23'. My sunsport was fantastic, but I knew that we'd be happiest in a v-drive.

I was approached by a forum member on the Moomba forum with a private offer to buy his XLV. He gave me a great deal and I had it transported across the country to Indiana to Washington. I received it last night and am very happy.

Very nice, If it doesn't already have it make sure to get the 1100# bags for the rear. The wave is phenomenal.

Tell me more. Have you been in a nicely setup XLV before? I'm VERY interested in knowing what was done to optimize the surf wave.

The boat came with an 1100 for the surfside locker, I think a 400 pound tube sack, and like another bag that's like 700 to 900 or something??
I bought another new 1100, so I for sure have a pair of 1100's that I could use. I was thinking of obviously an 1100 in the surfside locker, with the other one in the basement storage (under the playpen bow). And then fill the non-surfside bag a little and see how it looks??

The 1100 that goes in the locker is not the same as the playpen.

I think you would have a solid wave with (should be) factory 1180 full and Surfside 1100 full. If you want to add more, run it up under the seats where, I think, the factory cooler is.

Fiddle with the wake plate and non surf side weight a little.

It will be solid. Doesn't boonejeepin on moomba have a dialed xlv?

That's the plan.

The boat didn't have the gravity 3 to start with. the previous owner bought an 1100 for the surfside and I bought another one. and beyond that there are 4 more bags to play with, plus I have a 650 rear seat bag. so lots of bag options!

I have a cutout under the port seat where there's a cooler. I guess the previous owner literally filled the cooler with concrete?!?!? Go figure.

Is there plumbing to the playpen locker? If so, you need the 1180 to take advantage of that space.

I'd put the 2nd 1100. The other locker so you are set up for both sides and slammed wakeboarding.

Oh I see the pic ... You could run to the end of that bench seat but 1100 will full most of it, at least on mine.

Dont put any weight on the non surf side. That does nothing. Fill the 1100 pound on the sided you're surfing, and fill the bow bag. Put another bag up in the bow, and all your people on surf side. The more weight towards the back corner, the better.

Does it have a wake plate? If so, run it in the full up position. To lengthen the wave, lower it about 25%, but shouldn't ever be any lower than that for a good surf wave.

1180 front bag full, 1100 rear locker full. My buddies 06 xlv makes a great wave. Besides the 1100 rear locker upgrades the biggest difference was the custom swim platform i made for him. really helped the wave. oh, i raised the platform by 3/4"

. My platform is killing me. I was able to do fine with 3 people in the boat surfing, but when we had 7 in the boat with me surfing it had NO push. Very frustrating. I ordered some black HDPE and some royal blue Hydroturf and am making my own platform.

I am pretty confident that my platform is digging into my wave bad and robbing me of push.

That said, I’ve only had the boat out 4 times, so I haven’t had much opportunity to change things up.

I wakeboarded with about 650 center and the wake was GREAT. Way better than my supra ever was.

overall I am loving the boat.

Went out for the 2nd day in the row. 67 degree water temp and 81 degree air temp! This is unheard of for October in the PNW. But I'll take it! Heck, I'll even deal with the fact that the boat launch was a hot mess with people trying to get that one last trip.

Rolling 8 deep on the Sunsport woulda been about at capacity. Rolling 8 deep on the XLV was NO PROBLEM!

Yeah, I have a power wakeplate, so I've been playing with that. Right now I have a 650 in the center basement locker. I have a 400 I can put on top of that. Yes, I most certainly plan to get the 1180, but I figure I can wait it out until Black Friday and capitalize on whatever deal that Wakemakers is running then...

But the new platform will happen very soon. (well, maybe in a week or so as I have all the materials ordered and I'm at their mercy as far as arrival).

I am finally seeing this. Nice work and congrats to you. You should still be able to surf that thing with a full boat. We used to load down a buddies, back when they just came out with that same platform and it made a monster. It was shorter than some of the boats nowadays, but was still real big and nice.... Try loading more weight in the far back corner. We always loaded the back corner... Try setting some guys back there and then try hanging from the tower.... Just for sake of seeing if you can clean it up better and bigger and then change up weighting scenario...

Well, that's basically what I've been doing. I've been trying it with the 650 basement center sack as full as possible and I have an 1100 in the rear corner that I fill as much as possible. the first few times we went out we had a cooler that the previous owner had filled with concrete:

We took that out and replaced it with a cooler for drinks and stuff. but that's not THAT much weight. I mean, I am able to lift the concrete filled cooler.

When we went out Sunday, we had the 1100 mostly full and the 650 center mostly full. I couldn't get enough push to freeride comfortably with the two girls in front, so I had everyone come back and sit on the surf side (with one guy on the sundeck) and that was okay. not spectacular, but decent.

My thinking it that it's the platform??? Or maybe I need the gravity bag in the center basement?

I already ordered the HDPE for a new surf platform, so I'll at least be able to test that theory soon.

You need weight in the front. I'll try to find out what bag my buddy has up front

I don't have an xlv but I did upgrade from a supra direct drive to a Tige 22v this summer so I just went through the whole dialing in the surf wake exercise. This is a totally different hull, but some things should be pretty universal. Sorry for being a traitor but have to give props to the tigeowners forums, incredibly helpful.

Surf side stern weight: more displacement, more list = taller and stronger wave

Non surf side stern weight: more displacement, less list = taller wave, but you want to maintain enough list to keep the wave shape the way you want it and clean to maintain push

Bow weight: decrease wave height, but increases wave length. Use this in conjunction with your wakeplate. I'm assuming your wakeplate is somewhat similar to mine and will either push the bow up or down. The more bow weight you add, the more you change the wakeplate to push the bow back up to offset. There's an optimal angle in there somewhere.

Speed: Slower = taller height shorter length wave. Faster = shorter height longer length wave. I would suggest starting real slow (like 10.0 mph) and increasing from there.

There's just a lot of variables and you have to play with each of them to figure out how your boat reacts. I would suggest holding all variables constant and change one, to determine the relationship with your wave. Repeat this with all your different variables and you'll start to dial it in.

See the link for some platform talk and the surf flap mod. If your platform is digging in the water big time to the surf side, that could definitely be negatively affecting your wave. If you get a bunch of prop wash, add one of these surf flaps.

Trayson - I know some of what I am going to say defies traditional surf logic, but I would try it before you go butchering the swim platform. We surfed boats for years before people started changing swim platforms and guess what..... they still surfed great.
#1 Try surfing all your desired combinations without the swim platform on....
#2 Try taking the weight out of the front bag. Then slowly add weight to it. Again, I know this defies logic, but if I remember correctly that is how we had the best surf. It was always the best surf we got out of the older Supra 21V's (similar style hull). Start empty and then maybe fill it half way.
#3 The 1100 pound bag in the back is pushing weight forward. Add more weight to the back corner. Maybe throw a surf sack on top of that back sack and leave the compartment open. Just for testing purposes. If you have a bunch of big friends sit them there.... Just test it out a bit more.... Wish I could dig back and find pics, but we had a buddy in 06' (same hull I believe) that had one and we surfed it a bunch.

also... are you burping the air out of your bags? Seems routine, but question to ask. They will take on a bunch of air and look full and feel full.
I am also making assumptions that your opposite side bags are empty???

I'm being pretty good about burping it. and yes, the non-surf locker is empty. We rode it Saturday and it was decent I guess. My buddy that was very familiar with my sunsport said I was selling it a bit short so it's possible that I'm just expecting too much. As far as the platform, I've already got a custom one built out of HDPE and hydroturf. I'm not going to hurt my OEM Platform. Just swap out to something that I believe will work better.

Where did you get the hdpe from, and how thick is it? I thought about rebuilding the platform for my boat this winter. I kind of like that idea.

*** It is worth noting that on my Sunsport, I had to go with a 62" wide platform because I had 3 platform brackets. On my XLV, I've only got 2 brackets, so I have more flexibility on width.

with mine i did two layers of 3/4 inch ac plywood. it's about 50 a sheet. and has no voids. if you glue and screw it together and epoxy or rhinoline it, it will last for years. Just another alternative.
Trayson, i talked to my buddy with the 06 xlv and he just has the gravity games front bag. Not sure on the weight. The wave is really tall, in my opinion it could use some more length but still a really really good wave!

has the foam held up so far adhering to the HDPE? or have you not had it on the water yet? also, are you going to build a surfgate of some sort for this rig? i know you probably don't want to drill into the hull on that thing like you did the supra, but a malibu-style gate is easy to make and attach without drilling.

I actually have yet to put the platform on the boat. I've made some spacers to lift the platform just 1/2" and have those pre-drilled now. I just have to slap the platform on. But I figured I'd let the contact cement cure to full strength indoors since I wasn't using the boat this week (raining right now). Weather looks good for Sunday, so I'll test it out then.

Yes, I do plan on doing some kind of gate. The shape of my hull makes it about impossible to do an NSS style gate like I did in the Supra. In the short term, I'll make one that straps on the platform like many others have done (ghetto gate). I'm not sure what I'll do in the long term...
