Common 05-09 Launch/Sunsport 22/24 issues?

New to the forum but been lurking for a while. We're in the hunt for a used boat and believe we've narrowed it down to a Supra/Moomba or Malibu. I've read some informative threads on the Bu forum regarding years/vintages with common issues but haven't been too successful locating that information here (which could be a good thing I suppose).

Based on experience, anything particularly GOOD or BAD from 2005-2009ish that one should be on the look-out in the Supra line?

I can't think of any bad. It's all about how well the PO took care of them.

In 2009 supra went to the reversible ballast pumps.......I believe 2008 and earlier were sprinkler valve which you may want to upgrade....also in 2008 they went to dripless driveshaft seals although it wasn't until 2010 some time that they figured out that they had to be cooled off the tranny cooler drain in the ext 340 cat motors ..easy fix......the thermostat housing was reconfigured in 2010 to deal with overheating issues in the ext 340 cat engines. I would pay extra for the 2009 over the 2008 just for the improved ballast system. Imo

btw the low bows on the 22 and 24 are dunk masters if you are not careful.....the 21 V is almost un dunkable

Also for pre-2009 models, depending on where you live and the temp range, you may have to deal with and/or resolve the occassional issue with vapor lock. I think '09 models put the fuel pump in the tank but the years leading up to it still have it too close to the engine block and it gets pretty hot when the temp reaches 98 degrees and above.

I have an '08 Launch 21V and I'm super pleased with the build and crafstmanship that went into this boat. Easy to maintain and care for - great boats.

How much lower are the 22 and 24 bows? Like the 21v but they're not big enough for my clan and momma is not going to be cool with a swamp monster if that's a common issue.

As for the temps, I boat in the Midwest. May have to up my budget and vintage and skip the vapor and ballast issues.

The 22 and 24 share a lot of similarities. The 21v is a different boat, higher freeboard. I have several pics of the earlier year models I'll add. 21v will have a more consistent wakeboard wake while the 22 and 24 will have a longer surf wave. Both do the opposing but that is where their strengths lie. I'm sure you have seen the interior layout differences in the 22 and 24 vs the 21v. Other consideration ... do you prefer the playpen bow or walk thru bow?

2005 is the first year model for a couple of those boats I believe? 2007 saw an upgraded dash which is more of a "smart" system. You got a lot of good input on the 08 and up models.

The sprinkler system on the older boats is slow but can be easily swapped (though I haven't done it). It takes me 15 minutes or so to fill but I'm usually in no hurry and fill while driving. (1100's all around). If you are worried about doing ballast upgrades, though, I'd definitely lean Supra over Malibu if you plan to surf. Much easier to upgrade weight.

My issues with vapor lock have been easily solved with a bottle of water from the ice chest. I've ran in AR heat approx 100 hours a year for 3 years in a 06 340. I've, probably, vapor locked an average of 2 or 3 times per summer.

What's your budget and what will you be doing with the boat?

Thanks KG. I like all 3 versions, but really want the 15 or 16 person capacity vs 13 in the 21v. We have a Fam of 5 and often boat with friends/add'l Fam. Often tied up in a cove or at busy cliff areas at Table Rock Lake with kids so I can't have issues with swamping. By your pics I'm assuming it's a non-issue if my ballast are empty.

Never surfed, but plan to once I get the new ride. I would guess 50/50 board/surf.

Budget cap is $50k, would prefer to stay high 30's to low 40's but willing to step up for the right boat. Right now my problem is I can't make up my mind and it's too cold most places to go for test spins.

Just to qualify my statement on dunking or swamping.....an experienced driver will have no issues preventing this from happening , its inexperienced drivers turning around for pick up during heavy weighted surfing sessions when it will occur.

Agree with Doug, an experienced driver can overcome the bow dip.

Some of it comes down to the lake and how much you are paying attention. We visit a calm lake and I never think about the bow. However on the busy lake we go to, I'll occasionally not be paying attention and take some water over the bow but nothing too serious. It's usually just a nice cool off for the front passengers :)

As for the size. We absolutely love the space we have. It maneuvers kinda like a slug but once you get used to it, no problem. Just like most inboards, but a little bigger than most.

I know of 2 24's that you won't find listed but could be for sale and would fall in your price range of high 30's to low 40's. Do you like red or black ;) FWIW, the red 21v above sold last year for mid to low 30's at a dealership.

Thanks guys appreciate the info. I've since started eyeing the 21vs too. My wife thinks it silly to buy a 24 to accommodate the xtra Guests we have 2x's a year.

KG, who has the 24's and where are they at? I'm all for finding an off-market transaction. Price, location and model (prefer sunsport over launch) would dictate over color.

Are you going to be towing the boat? The extra size of the 24 is noticeable on the trailer; something to consider. Other than that, we love the space of ours. I personally would go for the launch over the sunsport so I could have the playpen bow. It makes a comfortable space for a few kids or a couple people to hang out. If you will be doing a lot behind the boat (with people who will be watching); I like the seating layout of the 22 and 24 over the 21v. It's not for everyone, though.

Red - 2006 Supra 24 with 400'ish? hours. Solid upgrades. Very clean. Texas. Somewhere around 40k I believe.

Black - mine ... 2006 Supra 24 with 600'ish hours. Solid Upgrades. Almost as clean. I'm not positive I'd sell ... would have to be the right deal.

Sharp looking rides. I'd like to find something with lower hours if possible. Suppose with adequate service records I could get comfortable. I'm coming from a 19' runabout with I/o so anything will be a substantial upgrade.

My current tow vehicle is a Honda Pilot...but I only need to drag it approx 100 yards to launch then it sits in slip until our stay is over. I'm pretty sure the pilot can handle the 21v, my contingency for a larger boat is to bribe the resort owner with a case of beer and use his full size truck to launch each time.

KG, I think I've found a 21v, would love to get your thoughts. Mind if I pm you with the details?

Something else to keep in mind ... I'd say 400 hours on a boat that old is nothing. Where mine sits at 600 is probably on the average to average-high side. An old boat with 100 hours isn't necessarily a good thing. It's all about how the boats were taken care of. These motors should run 2000 hours but I def understand aiming for a low hour boat.

Love our 22SSV. The ballast fill time is not an issue with me, I've upgraded to the pro x bags all around and had a pro throw the biggest tricks I've ever seen behind my boat so have no doubt they will take care of any wake boarding needs.I upgraded the vapor lock issue by adding a 2nd fuel pump, problem solved. Thanks pctarmor. If you don't mind me asking, what did the 2nd fuel pump cost? If I purchase from a dealer I may just work that into the deal.

What would you say the "comfort" capacity is for the 22?

Also, do you surf? How's the 22 work for you?

I had a dealer do it for me. They ordered a parts kit from Indmar and installed it for around 250 I think. I would work it into the deal.
We typically have a mix of kids and adults when we go out. The bow playpen comfortably manages 4-5 kids (mine are ages 3-7) or we have had 3 ladies up front.
5-6 full grown folks in the back is still very roomy. I have had the boat loaded with 14 adults before and its tight.
We do surf sometimes, but not frequently. I have the flyhigh pro 750s in back and the 1200 up front so I can get a pretty decent wave. I have also put a sac on the back locker and the wave is nice. My issue is I ride goofy and most of my friends are regular so that is the point where draining/filling can get to be a pain so we usually just wakeboard. That's what we prefer anyway. Let me know if you need any other info.

Just a vote for the 24, we love ours and there's usually just two of us. Yeah, we would be fine with a smaller boat but it is nice to have the extra room. We've never had too many folks want to jump in, there's always been room!!!!

But you can't go wrong with any of these.

Cosign this. 100%. Going from the 20ssv to the 24ssv, I don't know how we will ever do less.

I'm in the KC area also Chris, and have a buddy with a 2007 24SSV on Smithville lake if you ever want to see how that boat handles. I have the baby Supra (20V), and have been to Table Rock with it. It gets kind of bumpy around the Kimberling City area, but otherwise I had no issues with my boat which is essentially a mini version of the 22/24. If it was me, I'd skip the 22 footer and go straight to the 24. Nobody has ever said, "man, I wish my boat had less room in it". You'll enjoy the room, and the price difference isn't all that huge. I'd say the 24 is too big to pull with your pilot though. Maybe a quick launch 100 yards away would be fine, but I certainly wouldn't pull it on the Ozarks roads between KC and TR. Supra's tend to ride a little nose heavy on the trailer, so you'll likely be squatting pretty hard with that boat behind a Pilot.

Seeing these photos pretty much has me sold on a 22 at minimum, ideally a 24ssv or a Moomba XLV.

I hear you in the tow rig. We have a storage unit onsite at Tablerock, wouldn't dream of towing anything bigger than a 20 long distance with the honda.

Like I told KG, I need to see some of these models side by side. Going to try to get down to AZ or Vegas soon and check them out.

As far as swamping the nose, we have done it twice. It is driver's error. Take rollers on the side vs straight on. Don't put a lot of adults in the bow, come off plane quickly and go thru your wake right away. Let it roll past. We have had 6 adults, 4 kids and it is "comfortable". Wouldn't want more than 8 adults. But with the swim platform, when anchored, it is a 50' yacht the way everyone hangs out at the back.
