hook up a manual gauge and check see what you have for oil pressure. Do you have a gauge or a low oil pressure light? It's possible you knocked off the wire on the oil pressure sending unit.

if the compression ratio is kept below about 9.25:1 then running 89 octane shouldn't cause detonation if the engine is tuned properly. Anything above that, i'd recommend at least 91 octane.
