2011 21v with stock ballast - is it even worth my time trying to surf?

Gonna try wakesurfing for the first time this weekend (friend loaned us their liquid force venture 5'-6" board). Got an '11 21v with stock ballast. From what I've been reading on here, most people with a 21v wanna upgrade the rear ballast to 750s or 1100s. We MAINLY wakeboard, so will I be able to surf at all with stock ballast or just forget it until I'm ready to get bigger sacs?

What's the best weighting set up for me if I got just a driver and 3 rug rats in the boat? center sac half full, rear port full, and kids sitting on the left side? Speed around 10, wakeplate 1/3 down?

What about if I got 6 or 7 other adults in the boat?

I have the 2009, which AFAIK is the same hull and same stock ballast. We have REALLY struggle getting a decent wakesurf wake with our boat and I'm quite perplexed.

With stock ballast and just driver and 3 RR on board, I would doubt you're going to get off-rope, but you can certainly wakesurf and have a good time (make sure to have a wakesurf rope, do not use a wakeboarding rope!).

With 6-7 adults, if you put as many in port rear as possible and all on port side if possible then you may well have enough to get off rope.

We were out again Friday and I've now got 750 port rear, 400 port rear seat, 600 middle front the wave still is frothy and no push. For some -strange- reason the ONLY speed we are able to get off rope is around 7.4mph which is way slower than most people surf.

Like pap said you're going to have a tough time actually "surfing" with stock 400's. You'll have the rope in hand the entire time. Just not enough weight.

I have 2011 21v
650 center and 400 in rear. 2-3 people in boat and I can freeride for days.
I have a 650 to put in rear instead of 400 bit haven't yet.
You should be fine with an extra person or two in boat

10.2mph wake plate up all the way 100% 400lbs and I can surf all day, but I can do way more tricks and come backs from 20ft back with 1100 in the locker. Mind you we were free riding on an outback with just 4 peeps shoved into the left rear corner. Your not going to free ride your first time out unless your my daughter

My dad was able to let go of the rope stock ballast, the wave wasn't amazing but it could be done.

This is what I run and the pic speaks for itself ...

1100 in ski locker
1100 in port locker (for wakeboarding - keep stock 400 in right and fill both until starboard is full and then turn both off)
750 on top of port locker with the wake surf rope extension used to tie that bag to the ski pylon
No ballast in starboard
400 across the playpen (coincidentally this is the former stock back from the port locker
plate at 1/2
11mph
One adult on the port side and one driver (go straight, no need for stupid circles)

With more people we skip the 400 lb bag and put the people in the front
With a lot more people you can drop down the fill on the 1100 in port locker or skip the 750 up top. Best, repeatable wake surf wake is as shown in first paragraph though.

I agree with webbbrad. You can surf no problem with stock port filled and center full once you understand the principles of surfing. We go 11 mph. I did upgrade port sac to 750 and it made quite a difference. Like wake boarding so much more is about fundamentals than size of wake/wave. Go for it!
