Default loud clunk going into reverse on recent tranny rebuild

I have a 1987 sunsport with a 351 and a 1:1 Borg warner velvet drive. I totally blew up my reverse clutch plates at the end of last year. l just got it rebuilt by a local mechnic recently, and now I hear a fairly loud audible clunk as if someone just slammed it into reverse when I shirt it into reverse. It does not make any sound going into forward. I always make sure its in neutral for at least 1-2 seconds before shifting, Any ideas?

Check your fluid (although, I don't think that's the issue.) Has to be an internal problem -- I'd take it back to him and get him to fix it. You shouldn't even have to "pause" in neutral -- you should be able to shift between forward and reverse almost seamlessly.

Selector shaft play ? Adjust the linkage ? All that reverse has are two friction plates and one steel plates with compression springs . Did he replace the springs with that rebuild ? Cause no kit that I found had the springs . And I got the master . Just my two cents

So I talked to the transmission guy yesterday. I think he knew right away what the issue was. My idle was always fast ~1050 in gear. He said to put it back to factory and sure enough my loud clunk went away!

Idle should be around 600-800 depending on your accelerator pump on the carb , when you adjust the idle lower you may get a stumble going to full throttle . Or you may not but if you do there is a adjustment to make the transition smoother . Just research Holley accelerator pump adjustments

Yep, I knocked it down to about 675-700 and it seems to be much smoother going into reverse, and sitting at idle.
