    Default starter won't disengage

    Question I have an 86 pirataw/454 rebuilt starter, New relay still won't disengage pulled ignition and cleaned the terminal tried to start worked once then back to starter not disengaging could my problem be the ignition switch

    When that happened to me it was because of a low battery.

    It sounds more like the solenoid is sticking. If it doesn't clear itself from cycling a few times, you will have to pull the starter and clean and lube the solenoid pivot assembly.

    It's a new battery but will put on a charger while I pull the starter thanks for the information much appreciated

    Thanks all fully charged battery and just got off the water for test and tune after being in storage all winter let the summer fun begin

    I had this happen to me last year. The starter wouldn't disengage and it pretty much burned up the starter and I needed a rebuild. That said, I'm pretty confident that my problem ended up being the relay. It's a pretty cheap part if you shop around:

    This part, in the middle of the pic with the big wires attached to it:


    I went through 2 starter rebuilds before I replaced this part and had my starter not disengaging go away. Also, after the 1st rebuild, it didn't have the issue immediately, it took a while on the water first...

    its called a starter solenoid.

    Thanks. The term fell out of my brain. And calling it a 'starter wire engager thingy" probably wouldn't have helped anyone.
