Default PCM 40 I Transmission Rebuild pics / info

I finally got around to popping the tranny out and spliting it open. (sounds kinda dirty doesn't it?)

I took a few pics along the way, and have a couple of questions below.

Is there any way to make sure this damper plate is good, or bad?

Are these the drum cracks I've read about? If not, can you tell me what part of the transmission is considered the "drum", so i can inspect it?

It's hard to tell from the pictures. Pull the drum out. You will see the crack better on the other side where the shaft goes through. Change that plate. The first pic is the reverse section.

If you really want to check for cracks, invest in a dye penetrant kit. They're relatively inexpensive, and easy to use. Once you've got the kit you'll be able to check any piece (prop shaft comes to mind) whenever you have it apart. My kit saved me a new prop shaft, as when I lost my prop, I realized it had been banging against the keyway for some time. Had I not been able to dye check it, I would have replaced it on spec.
