    Default 2nd battery questions

I'm sure this question has been asked numerous times on this forum. I did search the forum and couldn't find an answer. I'm installing a 2nd battery to 02 ssv. I already have a generic auto zone deep cycle as the starting battery. I'd like to purchase an optima blue top but I've read somewhere you shouldn't install a 2nd battery with a different chemistry? Does this mean I should buy 2 new batteries? Is 2 gauge wire sufficient? Thanks for any help.

First off, why an Optima? For that kind of money, there are other AGM's with better Ah's.

If the batteries are going to be separated by switch or other isolator and used differently, then it is ok to have different types and different ages. If you are going to wire the 2nd in parallel to the original, then you need to like batteries of the same age.

    Is 2 gauge wire sufficient?
    Whats the use and application?

No reason for the optima battery other than most people use them. I'm going on my 3rd season with an autozone battery. I may purchase another. I'm installing on a perko or blue sea switch and all that would be installed on it would be stereo and led lights. 3 amps and and 3 24" led strips.

An Optima 31 has about 55ah. A typical group-24 wet cell deep-cycle will have 55-65 Ah and about half the price and a smaller foot print. For the money, you cant beet a quality group-29 marine deep-cycle. Same footprint of the Optima 31, but still cheaper and about 2X the Ah. Just remember, wiring all the loads to the "C" post of the switch is best.

Are you saying wire the amp and led power leads to perko switch right?

    Default 2nd battery questions

    JMCMASTER1976:

Would you be looking for a battery VSR switch?
It came from Supra. They used them on their boats.

If so, shoot me an email. I still have this one.
