    Default Oil Change Question

I'm going to do my first oil change on my 2002 Supra Launch (Indmar) boat.
    Are these the correct steps?

    1) Run boat for 10mins
    2) remove spark plug and insert pump hose
    3) pump out oil
    4) put in spark plug
    5) replace oil

    Questions
    1) What is a good pump to purchase?
    2) What is the best type of oil to use?

    Thanks. Paul

run boat to warm up oil
If boat is not equipped with a drain hose already installed (on direct drive) then you can drain oil out of fill tube using a pump (v-drive or direct drive).
I use a cheap hand pump from Harbor Freight, but there are may options available.
remove oil filter (hold plastic bag over filter to help catch some of the oil)
    put on new oil filter
replace oil (I use Shell Rotella T 15w-40) but everyone has their favorite.
run engine to circulate oil and top off.

    Good Luck

    Thanks Patfan.
When I look up that oil is says its a Diesel engine oil? Does that matter?
Also is it best to use Synthetic?

If you want to use synthetic it's up to you, I know some people on this forum only use Mobile 1. I change my oil every 50 hours and like Rotella T.
You can use whichever oil you like.

there should be a quick drain hose clipped on to the engine lifting bracket. the hose comes from the bottom of the oil pan. you can not get any oil out thru the spark pug hole. You can use the dipstick tube but i wouldn't as you can get the suction tube stuck in this tube and its not fun trying to get it out once stuck....yes i know.....once drained and filter changed , run engine and check for leaks around the oil filter and check oil level and adjust as necessary

    Remove spark plug???? LOL!

Pumping out leaves all the sludge in the bottom of the oil pan. On some motors that is the only option...but you should drain from the pan drain plug if at all possible. As doc said, there should be a 1/2" hose with a cap that is clipped to the side of the motor. Unclip it, remove the cap, and drain out of the rear boat bilge plug.

Also...do not run the engine for 10 minutes dry. The cooling impeller will shred. Run it wet or not at all. The idea of changing oil hot is to thin it out to drain faster. It will drain cold, it just takes longer.

Please tell me the "spark plug" was a typo. There is no oil there!

I follow the same plan in my 2007 - Rotella and 50 hours.
There are many topics on here about filters and cross reference numbers.

If you are going to use Mobil 1 the 15w50 weight is the only recommended weight for both flat and roller lifter marine engines.
