Default Adjusting throttle and shift cables, 89 conbrio

I just purchased an 89 conbrio with only 230 hours on it. Boat is beautiful and in great shape.
The only problem I have is sometimes when starting:
When I turn the key = nothing.
I engage the transmission knob put it in reverse.
    Return to neutral.
    Disengage the transmission knob.
    Now she starts fine.

Any ideas on what I need to do to fix this.

    Thanks!

Is your cable kinked up or restricted somehow?

No they are not kinked or twisted.

Neutral position on the throttle doesn't match up with the neutral position on the transmission so it locks out the starter to prevent starting it in gear is my guess.

Thanks, what should I do to fix that. How do I match up the neutral position on the throttle with the neutral position on the transmission?
    Thanks.

Unhook the shift cable from the transmission, put shift lever on transmission and throttle in neutral, adjust cable to fit onto shift lever on the transmission.
