I do some big time red-neckin... The only problem with the factory towable cover is the nylon straps that batter the hull and leave rub marks. Once on a long tow, I actually used some 1" foam pipe wrap and wire ties to protect the boat. Now I have removed the straps and use a soft cotton jacketed poly rope to tie from loop to opposite loop. Tying to the trailer just leaves room for the ropes to rub. I have also heard recommendations for long (vacation like tows) to have the boat shrink wrapped- protects the boat and cover.

Twist the straps and they don't beat the hull to death. Air flowing over a flat strap causes it to flutter in the wind, twist it 2x and the fluttering stops.

That is true, but even with the twist they still rub... found out the hard way. The nylon straps are just too abrasive when battered against the hull.
