    Default Transmission leak and slip - 1995 Comp TS6M

    Per my previous thread where this was briefly mentioned, trying to get the issues sorted out with this boat that spent quite a stint in storage, the next major one, since the leak is now solved, is getting the transmission fixed.

    Symptoms:

    -It's leaking, but only to a certain point. This points to it being a seal. I am checking the fluid with the engine running, when I first checked it, it was a solid inch below where it should be via this method.

    -The transmission was slipping pretty bad when we first put it in the water, feeling like you were in a standard and stabbing the clutch pedal intermittently under any sort of real acceleration. Topping it up seemed to mostly eliminate the slip, but it will still do it if you hole-shot it, or turn left really hard. The turning issue seems to abate as the unit gets up to temp...

    Now, assuming that this unit is damaged, which, given the slipping, is pretty much a guarantee, who do you folks normally take them to for service? I'm in Ontario and we do not have a local Supra dealer in the Kawartha's that I know of, and this is an older boat, so not sure who is familiar with PCM drives either.

    The boat is coming out of the water in a few weeks, I'll be pulling the engine, cleaning and re-sealing the entire rest of the rub rail area, and then the boat, sans engine, is going to get the two cracks that are below the engine fixed. While this is being done, I'd like to have the drive unit either repaired or replaced, so I'm trying to formulate a game plan for that.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Any inboard service center should be able to repair it the trans is not a supra only part.

    From my research if it is the input seal that is leaking, the pump is worn and will need replacing. My 1995 Comp had got water in the trans at some point and had a very dirty neutral, to the point the the boat would idle as fast forward in neutral as it would when shifted to drive. I got frustrated with it and swapped it out for a used velvet drive I found on craigslist. It has been rock solid since then. Here is my thread about the swap.

    If you are not comfortable rebuiliding your transmission you could send it out to shop that specializes in marine transmissions. I took mine out and sent it via UPS to a shop - cost about 65 each way.

    send it to Fantastic Finishes Marine. they did the tranny in my Sunsport. Shipped it ground each way.

    I have a buddy who's a marine mechanic who has indicated that he's comfortable doing it, so I'm going to give him a crack at it. Thanks for all the help guys

    Your buddy should have no issues. I just rebuilt a 72c velvet drive in my parents mastercraft. Would have had it completely stripped and back together in 1 day if not for all the reverse pressure plate springs being in multiple pieces.

    Are you going to fix everything with your own hands?
    Try to look for a boat specialist in your area, sure you should find someone.

    I'm comfortable with everything except the drive and fiberglass repair. I've got a ton of experience with Windsor Ford engines and boats in general, so I've been fixing stuff as I go here, but the drive issue, I think would be easier just to have somebody who has dealt with them before do it.

    Of note: I've had the boat almost wide-open now as well as doing a number of hole shots and as long as the fluid is confirmed as being in the correct range, it doesn't slip at all (I was not cycling forward/reverse before checking it before), so my thought is there isn't much wrong with the drive other than the leaking seal, though it makes sense to refresh it if the cost is reasonable if it is already apart IMHO, and I'm sure there has to have been some damage from it being run low.
