    Default Update 2020

Time to update the Comp thread as well while I am at home for once. Stored it outside covered for close to a year. The squirrels were trying to find a new home but did not succeed thankfully. I got her in the garage for a few days when we had lots and lots of rain back in February and began stripping her down a bit. Decided to start with the wet sand, buff and gelcoat after having found a great shop to do my 242. So, off came the striping.
Miserable work. Blue stripe came off easily, the rest gave me a run for my money. Then I took off the rub rail and started to undress her by removing the back seat and captain's chair along with the side upholstery. Took off any accessory, light or gator step pad that would prohibit a clean renewal on the gelcoat. I had 3 straight days with it and maybe spent 20 - 22 hours of prep time. I didn't completely get all the sticky off before running it to the shop because my fingers were dull and numb but I was close. She was red at some point so we'll have to see just how good she bounces back after all that oxidation.

    SHOP VISIT #1

Two weeks ago I got to stop by the shop and check in on the Comp. She had just been wet sanded at this point. They hadn't done the underside but will do that when the lift is available. Any gelcoat you visibly see, will be wet sanded, buffed and polished to perfection.

Swim Platform will be getting repaired at the same time the boat is in the shop. Definitely has been hit in a few places and the gelcoat needs repair.
I spent several hours taking off the gator step but the sticky did not come off without a fight. Again, miserable work.

Do you really want to know? Somewhere between not so cheap and expensive.

    Shop Visit #2

Stopped by again today to check the progress. I'm happy so far with what I could see under the bad lighting conditions. He has polished it up a bit now as he awaits more work before doing final wax. Should be even better when it sees the sunlight. I can see actually see red and white gelcoat and a shine which is complete change from earlier pics. Damn, is it gorgeous in person.

I'm just gonna say this, I am going over budget quite a bit to restore this boat, but I believe it will be worth it in the long run.

Default History of the 1991 Comp Ts6m

I'm gonna post up a few pieces of history on this boat before I post any more pics of the restoration. With the original paperwork, engine manual and brochures included in the sale and being only a one owner, low hour boat, it made the purchase a no brainer for me. Well, that and the fact I stole it for $1250.00 which is a far cry from the $17,000 it sold for new. Sorry Michael Hunter! There was a trailer included for that price which they sold off at some point since this boat just sat on a lift in a boat house year round and serviced by on-site mechanic.

Built in January of 1991 with composite materials (confirmed) and then used as a Factory Demo (see paperwork), it was not sold to the original owner until March of 1993, two years after being built. Turns out it was the same local Supra dealer my Rider was purchased from ten years earlier.

I also found a receipt for a 25 hour service which was written on August 16th, 1993 just 5 months after it found a new home. They did not list the hours of the boat on the invoice at that time, which I was hoping for to see how many hours may have been put on the boat by the factory before they relinquished control of it. The last line made me laugh though, "customer says boat uses too much gas." Not sure you can fix that on a carbureted 351W inboard.

I am still in touch with the family I bought it from and have kept them up to date with the restoration progress. They are happy it went to a good home and hope to see it in person one day. The son grew up slalom skiing behind this boat and then competed nationally from my understanding.
