    Default leak

    ihave a small leak around the drive shaft and what i would call a jam nut. i know there is rope or cord packing in there that probably needs replaced. anyone know what size cord? any helpful hints? it's a 87 sunsport. thanks, paolaken

    i presume your talking about a water leak from the "stuffing box" where the shaft passes thru the hull?
    If so then your right, there is packing rope inside and it can be replaced easily, having said that there should be a slight leakage of water thru the joint in order to lubricate the seal, but only about four drops per minute. If you have more of a leak then you can adjust the packing by tightening the nuts, although if the packing is very old you can replace it easily enough.There are other postings on this board about stuffing boxes
