Default How to Know if Stings are Bad?

2002 Supra Launch. I keep reading about guys with bad stringers and was wondering how do you know if they are bad? Is this in older boats with wooden stingers? Have read newer boats are not wood, but don't really know.

As I understand it, Supra started using composite (or something less apt to rot) stringers in 92'. I have a 91' and yes, I'm having my stringers replaced. As far as how to know they're bad; I had some cracking fiberglass around the motor mounts. The kicker was when I tried to re-tighten a motor mount bolt that had backed out. The thing wouldn't tighten, in fact, it I was able to pull it out by hand...with some rotted wood slivers on it.

you don't have anything to worry about with an 02. for the older boats, it's just a matter of time. they weren't built to last forever.

ps i deleted your other post, same question

You can also pull your motor mount lag bolts that go into the stringers. If they are rusty, wet and/or disintegrating you are in trouble! Most stringers go bad around the motor.
