    Default 89' comp/351 starter question?

    Ok I did something really stupid, If its not broke, dont fix it! I'm rebuilding my boat and i was painting my engine today so It took off the starter witch was working fine, but i wanted to repaint it also so I cleaned it up and greased the shaft that the gear slides on and reinstalled it, and now my boat wont start. Its not engaging, its just spins really fast and wont engage. Any tips on tinkering with it? I dont want to replace it unless i have to! Thanks for your help..Jet

    wipe the greas off the shaft, it may be holding up that gear from sliding against the fly wheel.
