Loud Noise - 91 Sunsport

Was servicing engine, tranny, while hooked up to the garden hose. When I shift into gear at idle there is a terrible racket that appears to be coming from underneath the boat. Since there is nothing under there except the shaft and the bracket that holds the shaft it must be the bracket, but I can't find anywhere to lube that bracket.

Does this disappear when in the water or am I missing something that needs grease?

what typea of racket? Is it a squeal or a rattle?

more like a screeching noise you would hear if something needed grease. I guess that would be a squeal.

I have a 90 comp and when running out of the water get a similar noise.
There seem to be two issues here. Firstly, the drive shaft is lubricated by water so obviously out of water its running dry and will "squeal". Secondly the pcm transmission will also make a noise if you engage drive with, to quote the pcm manual, "inadequate torque on output shaft" ie. no resistance on the prop ie. out of the water.
If, like me, the noise dissapears in the water then you should be fine.

When i first serviced my boat at home and engaged drive, the resulting racket convinced me id wrecked something expensive.
