Black RTV is what I used. Several times.
Former owner of a 1987 Supra Saltare. Current owner of a Malibu 23LSV.

Yes. Pull off that last metal flange. Wire wheel it or grind off all the old debris (be careful about not getting too crazy.) Use Black RTV or 3M 4200 to seal.

Wow Wotan...SkiDim told me to use 3M 5200 but didn't explain anything to me. THank you very much for the advice. I will do.

My preference would be 5200 for anything below the waterline. I'm sure it's a bitch to get off if you need to, but if you're not planning on pulling it apart any time soon I'd do 5200.
