How long will a rudder last?

As the end of the summer my 86 comp crossed the 1700 hrs mark. I have about ½” of play from side to side on the rudder. How much is to much.

That sounds worn out to me, it must let alot of water into bilge area while your in the water.Sounds like you need to replace stuffing box and rudder assembly.
Was this a ocean used boat?? was there a grease nipple for rudder shaft maintnance??
