New engine sputters on acceleration after engine is Hot. Starting is difficult.

I have a 1985 supra with a brand new 351W pleasure craft Engine

Using only recreational fuel.
New fuel filter.
New spark plugs distributor points.
Experienced mechanic install the engine with existing components.


Holley 4 barrel. Have not and do not know when carb has been overhauled.
I know that the choke is not working quite correctly. Sometimes the choke opens and sometimes it does not.


Haven't quite figured out how to start the engine consistently.

Once the engine started. It accelerates with a lot of power and energy. Planes out very quickly.

I have a four fin prop on the boat. Was told by previous owner it was for wake boarding (power prop).

I have only pulled kids with the boat. Not too much load.


After engine is hot acceleration is poor and engine sputters and coughs.


Other unexplainable behavior:

Always must unplug battery or the battery will die. I think this is due to the radio wired in incorrectly.

Sometimes the engine will start after I let up on the starter key.

It sounds like the Holley needs some attention. Starts cold but sputters hot says you are running too rich. The engine will flood and cause all kinds of starting issues when hot. You said it yourself when you know the choke is not functioning properly.
