Ignition protection and ballast

I've got a general question...

I'm starting a fully plumbed and automated ballast project for my 1990 sunsport. I just picked up some of the 1" Electric Solenoid Valves off ebay (here), good performance at a decent price.

However, they are not ignition protected, so here is my question. What are all the areas that require ignition protection... of course the engine compartment but what about the following:

- ski locker
- gunnels
- under the spotters bench
- under the bow cushions

I've been meaning to call the dealer to get their input but keep missing their work hours.

I'm not sure about other parts of the vessel, but I would think you would want to be especially careful about any part of the boat that is open to the bilge area. I would also think the ski locker area would be "off-limits" to non-marine type electrical devices because the fuel tank is directly below. My guess is that you'd be better safe than sorry.

I put my Simer ballast pumps under the spotters bench next to the battery. The gunwale would be a great spot too. Can't believe those aren't Ign. Prot.!

I put mine under the middle seat on the rear bench and it works fine

Will a tsunami type pump work that high above bilge area? I am planning on plumbing my system soon. I have four Of these pumps and might use them. I want it right the first time so I may go with Mikeyds type of pump. Any suggestions?

I believe the tsunami pumps are indeed ignition protected. From what I've seen most people mount them as close to the water intake as possible and under the water line. That's what I have ordered to use with my system as well. I'll route the line to somewhere safe where I'll mount the valves. I'll post more details about my system as I go along.
