Do you think that the boat sitting in the water has enough of a difference of load on the engine sucking up the water vs having the hose push the water though to cause it to die at idle in the lake even though it runs fine on the hose?

My idle is slightly lower in the water vs on the hose. I attribute this to exhaust backpressure.
use a bucket and suck it up in the boat .. works great as you can see the water flow it uses
