Salty87 -- Looking at your housing, it does look taller than mine. I wonder if it would matter, though. The top half of the housing clamps the thermostat down. It seems like the auto thermostat would still work -- I bet it's the same diameter. As long as it opens when it's hot, how could it make a difference?

Mine is also the non automotive one, looking like a cylinder.
    Here is my housing :

    Here is my T-stat :

Does anyone have the same housing with an automitive t-stat inside ?

Salty, do you know the price of the t-stat #0701 from Skidim ? Is it a 160° or 145° ?

That's mine as well. I second the thoughts about Skidim, and when I spoke with them about it a couple of years ago they said that there isn't an automotive equivalent and I'd have to change housings to start using a different t-stat.

And I want to say it's 160 degrees, but for some reason 145 also sticks out in my mind.

That's my thought. I'd look at the auto t-stats of the same diameter. They are just valves that open when heated. Nothing overly complex. If it fits the correct diameter, and the temperature rating, you should be good to go.

I'd probably go with the 145 degree t-stat. I'd rather it open up earlier so if there is a problem I know before the motor got too hot.

I'm afraid about the exhaust temperature if I try to put in place a car T-stat without this particular cylinder geometry. But for the price, I can try, this can save time and money.

Here is the answer of skidim :

The PCM original 145 degree, Item #0701, is no longer available. We were
selling a newer 98-2002 housing and T-stat but now they are gone as well.
We have ordered an aftermarket housing that uses the standard T-stat. It
will be in on Friday and we want to check it for fit before we sell it. We
can ship to France but will have to get back to you when we verify it will
    work
I will go for a 160° t-stat, as I'm looking for an efficient engine to save gas, hotter is better. I always take a look at the temperature gauge, as I'm a little bit unlucky with engine's temperature ...

Interesting. I thought a cooler engine ran better than hot?

A cooler engine makes more power (cold air is more dense) but a warmer engine uses less gas/runs more efficiently/and the hotter oil is good for everything.
